On the occasion of the 18th session of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF), Reforest'Action co-organized on May 9th a panel bringing together leaders from the private sector to discuss the positive role of regenerative agriculture and agroforestry in achieving the Global Forest Goals. The first panel of its kind at the UN, this event could pave the way for a partnership between the private sector and the UNFF.

AXA Forests for Good: a collective project to set up new sustainable forest management methods to combat health risks and climate change

Launched in September 2022, the AXA Forests for Good initiative aims to restore damaged forest ecosystems while making them more resistant to health risks and climate change. This 3-year program will be implemented on 400 of the 15,000 hectares of forests owned by AXA in France. The goal is to restore 87 plots in six forests that are being attacked by bark beetles across three French administrative departments: Meuse, Jura and Nièvre. To implement this project, AXA is supported by a group of active stakeholders, led by Reforest'Action and composed of AgroParisTech, two entities of the National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and Environment (INRAE Renfor and Biogeco), France Nature Environnement (FNE) and four local associations. They will combine their environmental, social, technical and educational expertise to support forest restoration.

Carbon finance

Carbon finance: a powerful tool in the fight against climate change

Greenhouse gases or GHGs act as a "natural protective shield" that keeps the Earth warm enough to live on. However, the increased concentration of these gases in the atmosphere (+51% of GHG emissions between 1990 and 2020 at the global level) is leading to an excessive climate warming. Since 2005 and the entry into force of the Kyoto Protocol, mechanisms have been developed to encourage governments to reduce their carbon emissions. In order to do this, GHGs are gradually being transformed into tradable goods that can be exchanged on markets, just like any other currency, thus giving rise to a new branch of modern finance: carbon finance.

AR6 Synthesis Report, IPCC 6th Climate Change Report, 2023 : Key findings, policy options and the role of forests

In March 2023, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) published a synthesis report that concludes eight years of work. It summarises the state of knowledge on climate change and its impacts on human societies and ecosystems. The experts call for a drastic and rapid reduction in greenhouse gas emissions while implementing measures to adapt to climate change. According to the report's authors, several effective and affordable options for action are available - including forest conservation, reforestation, agro-forestry, and certain agricultural practices. However, the experts lament that the financial flows that must be devoted to this are still far from up to the task.

The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD): compliance requirements for companies (2/2)

The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD): compliance requirements for companies (2/2)

Effective January 5, 2023, a new Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) requires new environmental, social, and governance (ESG) disclosures. Companies must therefore prepare for compliance with the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) (see article 1/2). This directive imposes greater transparency on companies, but above all encourages them to embark on a transformation project that profoundly reexamines the companies’ impact on their environment – as well as the impact of the environment on the company.

The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD): compliance requirements for companies (1/2)

Effective January 5, 2023, a new Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) requires new environmental, social, and governance (ESG) disclosures. It supersedes the 2017 European NFRD (Non-Financial Reporting Directive), which had introduced the non-financial reporting obligation and whose implementation into French law had led to the non-financial performance declaration (DPEF, by its French acronym) of companies into their annual management report. Companies must consequently prepare to comply with the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS). Sustainability reporting should improve the information quality, reliability and accessibility for stakeholders and suppliers.

Participation of Reforest'Action in the One Forest Summit: Global summit for the preservation and sustainable management of tropical forests

Stéphane Hallaire - President and Founder of Reforest'Action, participated in the One Forest Summit, on March 1st and 2nd, 2023, in Libreville, Gabon. This world summit in favor of the preservation and sustainable management of tropical forests put at the heart of the debates the question of the valorization of natural capital by proposing scientific, environmental, social, and economical solutions to the forest countries. Measures were adopted within the "Libreville Plan" framework to help them reconcile the demanding protection of these ecosystems with direct economic interests.

What is biodiversity? Definition and issues.

What is biodiversity? Definition and issues.

Biodiversity degradation and ecosystem collapse are among the top five global risks to society in the next decade. Understanding both the role of biodiversity in ecosystem functioning and the main causes of biodiversity loss allows us to consider future challenges and potential actions to conserve biodiversity.
