Climate Week 2022: Reforest'Action participates in the dialogue on forest restoration

Invited by the World Economic Forum to participate in various events during the Climate Week as part of the Sustainable Development Impact meetings, Stéphane Hallaire, President of Reforest'Action, shared our expertise in reforestation and agroforestry. His presence in New York was also an opportunity to have bilateral meetings with major actors and funders of forest restoration.

Blue Carbon Ecosystems: A “Nature-Based Solution” to fight Climate Change

The term “Blue Carbon” refers to the carbon stored in coastal and marine ecosystems, such as seagrasses, salt marshes, mangrove swamps, peatlands, and kelp beds. Blue carbon ecosystems are particularly important for their capacity to store carbon and are considered as a key component of nature-based solutions to climate change. It can also provide many other significant benefits - such as socio-economic benefits, increased biodiversity, or cleaner water. Unfortunately, they are some of the most threatened ecosystems on Earth. 35% of mangroves have disappeared in only 20 years for instance.

Jos (Nigeria)

Nigeria: the circular bioeconomy develops food security for the population

As part of the Circular Bioeconomy Alliance established by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, the Jos project in Nigeria aims to develop agroforestry to improve food security and farming practices for the population. During this 2021-2022 season, a total of 250,000 trees will be integrated into the plots of 2,500 farmers.

In India, the forest-based circular bioeconomy generates socio-economic benefits for the population

Developed within the framework of the Circular Bioeconomy Alliance established by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, the Assam Living Lab project in India aims to restore degraded forests in the Eastern Himalayas and develop agroforestry, a source of socio-economic benefits for the populations. Led on the ground by the Balipara Foundation, the project contributes to a circular bioeconomy that sustainably valorizes biological resources from trees and ensures their circular transformation into food, energy from biomass and biomaterials, with the objective of sustainably improving the living conditions of local communities.

Fatick (Senegal)

Senegal: raising awareness of forest restoration among schoolchildren

Ahead of the reforestation project, which aims to plant 1.3 million trees in three years in the Fatick region of Senegal, an environmental education program is being set up to raise awareness among schoolchildren about the restoration of their country's forest ecosystems. Led by Nébéday, a major player in reforestation in Senegal, the program has been initiated in 100 schools between fall 2021 and spring 2022.

Taza (Maroc)

Morocco: supporting the restoration of agroecosystems and their evolution towards fruit production

In the province of Taza in northeastern Morocco, the project supported by Reforest'Action and led on the ground by the High Atlas Foundation involves 3,000 farming families, including women's communities, in the development of agroforestry. By introducing key tree species into degraded farmland that enrich the soil with nutrients, retain water and attract pollinators, the actions carried out on the ground will enable farmers to develop their income and food self-sufficiency.

Togo: a regenerative project for sustainable coffee and cocoa production

In Togo, the agroforestry project within the coffee and cocoa sectors initiated in 2019 has been renewed for 2021 and 2022. While 65,000 trees have taken root in 2021, the current season will see an additional 35,000 trees planted. Regenerative, the project aims to restore the environmental functions of cultivated plots while generating additional social and economic impact for local producers.

Mexico: supporting local vanilla production through agroforestry

In the northern Mexican state of Veracruz, nearly 92% of the forests have disappeared in fifty years to create agricultural land for intensive cattle and citrus production. As climate change increases the frequency and intensity of cyclones and droughts, the restoration of forest cover is a key issue for the preservation of biodiversity and the resilience of populations. It is in this context that Reforest'Action is partnering with the Asociación Mexicana de Bosques Comestibles (AMEBOSCO) to develop agroforestry in vanilla fields, of which Mexico is one of the world's largest producers.

Lilongwe (Malawi)

In Malawi, agroforestry increases food and energy self-sufficiency for local communities

In Malawi, the agroforestry project financed by Reforest'Action and led on the field by the NGO Inter Aide aims at ensuring food subsistence and increasing the energy autonomy of local communities by integrating trees, sources of fruits and wood, around cultivated fields. With a strong community dimension, the project accompanies the farmers at each step of the creation of these agroforestry systems, from the production of trees in nurseries to their planting and maintenance. Designed to run for three years, the program aims to produce and plant a total of 300,000 trees in different villages in Lilongwe District.

Mont Kenya (Kenya)

Kenya: ensure the sustainability and expansion of the project through rigorous monitoring and the identification of new beneficiaries

Initiated in January 2020, the agroforestry and reforestation project funded by Reforest'Action and deployed by Trees for Kenya has planted 410,000 trees within protected areas of Mount Kenya National Park, farms and schools in Tharaka Nithi and Embu counties. This first phase concluded in December 2021 and benefited over 360 farmers. In 2022, the project continues with the monitoring of the agroforestry plots created in past years and the goal of planting an additional 250,000 trees.
