A tree species with multiple benefits for the restoration of South African ecosystems

In the Eastern Cape, South Africa, land desertification is caused by the increasing pressure of livestock on grazing land. Today, the depletion of vegetation cover and the degradation of the land of local farmers and surrounding reserves are causing many adverse environmental effects, such as the depletion of water resources, biodiversity erosion and soil erosion. In this context, Reforest'Action is partnering with C4 EcoSolutions and AfriCarbon, two South African companies, to restore these ecosystems by planting 500,000 trees of a local species essential to the ecological functioning of the region.

Amazonia, Siberia, Indonesia, Boreal regions… Understanding the different types of fires

Over the recent years, forest fires have been multiplying all over the world, causing major damages for biodiversity and Humankind. According to a study published in 2016 by Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), scientists discovered - for the first time - a link between the rise of temperatures and the increase of fires frequency and intensity in the American Wild West. In 2019, the European Union's Earth observation programme Copernicus estimated that an average 11 hectares of land were burnt every second in the world..

EU Forest Strategy for 2030: a strong environmental path

The European Commission just released on Friday 16 July its new EU Forest Strategy. This Strategy supplements the Fit for 55 Package (published on 14 of July) and will contribute to achieve the EU’s target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from 55% by 2030, as set out in the European legislation on Climate. This new ambitious strategy “recognises the central and multi-functional role of forests, and the contribution of foresters and the entire forest-based value chain for achieving by 2050 a sustainable and climate-neutral economy while ensuring that all of ecosystems are restored, resilient, and adequately protected.”
