Deforestation, a Scourge in Africa

Forêts

According to Nobel Peace Prize Winner Wangari Maathai, who is also the founder and president of the Green Belt Movement, nearly 17% of the world's forests are in Africa and 50 % of the world's deforestation occurs there. Africa's rate of deforestation is the highest in the world with 0.5% of its forests disappearing every year. The annual deforestation rate is estimated at 13 million hectares, an area equivalent to the size of Portugal.
