Project description
Reforest'Action works in collaboration with the Forest Committee to reforest a stand of dead ash trees after chalarose.
Project at a glance:
- Number of trees to be planted : 6127 arbres
- Area: about 8 acres
- Species planted: oak, torminal alisiers, Atlas cedars
- Type of project: Restoration of a degraded forest
Context
Some time ago, this massif was a dying poplar plantation and a coppice. This plot seems to have suffered the consequences of an unreasonable populiculture (poplar cultivation). Indeed, poplar cultivation is unfortunately often conducted in even-aged monocultures, i.e. with trees of the same species, age and sometimes monoclonal: descendants of a single individual. This type of management does not benefit biodiversity development and makes stands vulnerable to disease. Perhaps that the reason why this massif has declined.
After finally harvesting the last poplars, an attempt to plant oaks failed. Poor soil preparation, poor plant maintenance and high deer pressure can explain the failure of this plantation.
The new project will allow the reforestation of sessile oaks, some Atlas cedars and alisiers. A fence and a subsoil will allow the growth of the plants and the perpetuation of afforestation.
