Project description

In collaboration with Coforet, Refroest'Action invites you to plant on this former Saône et Loire poplar plantation north of Mâcon.

The project at a glance

  • Number of trees to plant: about 3500
  • Surface of the plantation: about 4,3 hectares
  • Species planted: red oak, cherry tree
  • Project type: restoration of an ecosystem degraded by deseases

Context

This plot was planted with poplar. After a few years of growth, the trees withered, their health was degraded. The trees were affected by rust, a frequent disease of poplars. Melampsoras, which eight species are currently identified in France, are the fungi responsible for various rust in plants. Melampsora larici populina is the species responsible for poplar rust and requires the presence of a second host usually European larch to complete its cycle. Once reached, the poplar loses its leaves, and its growth is thus reduced.

The new owner will revitalize this parcel which is in the state of wasteland in order to create a dynamic massif. The implantation of red oaks and cherry trees will allow the reception of a rich biodiversity. Indeed, the wild cherry tree is a fruit species very appreciated by the forest fauna.
