Project description

Help us establish community nurseries to support reforestation, preserve endemic species, and improve incomes for local communities in rural Pankshin Hills.

The project at a glance

Number of trees to be planted:  240,000
Species planted: African locust bean, Canarium, Cashew sp., Moringa, Cycad sp., Baobab, Cashew sp., Tamarisk, Teak, Shea tree, Horse tamarind and more.
Planting period: from May to October 2022

Context :

In Nigeria, one of the most deforested countries in the world, the forest cover and wildlife habitat are decimated to make room for agricultural lands, particularly designed for oil palm production. At the same time, the need for wood energy and the development of urban areas are contributing to the over-exploitation of natural resources.

To the north-east of the city of Pankshin, capital of the Plateau State, this vast agroforestry and reforestation project plans to plant 720,000 trees over 3 years. Supported on the ground by the NGO CrescenDO, it covers several areas including a nature reserve, villages, plains and the banks of a river.

On site, the nursery, planting and maintenance of the trees are carried out by the local communities, with technical support from CrescenDO. In the long term, this approach will help preserve biodiversity, restore forest ecosystems, prevent soil erosion and strengthen the carbon storage capacity of the Nigerian forest cover. On the socio-economic level, the project will give communities access to sustainably managed wood energy. As for the populations, they will be able to develop income-generating activities (marketing of plants and fruits produced in agroforestry), which are environmentally friendly.

The planting project :

This project relies on 4 aspects :

- The restoration of ecosystems located in mountainous areas. This approach aims in particular to preserve the encephalartos, a rare prehistoric plant endemic to the region and currently endangered.

- The establishment of agroecosystems in villages to increase crop productivity, improve the resilience of the various ecosystems and contribute to the food security of the local population.

- Planting on the plains: around the Pankshin Hills, trees are planted on large areas of the plains to limit soil erosion and store carbon.

- Riverbank planting : 25 km east of the Pankshin Hills, trees are being introduced on the banks of a river to drain the soil and allow the establishment of rich biodiversity in the area.
