Project description

We invite you to finance the reforestation of this parcel of land in Puy-de-Dôme, damaged by snow.

The project at a glance

  • Number of trees to be planted: about 5000
  • Total project area: 3.75 hectares
  • Species planted: spruces and Douglas
  • Type of project: restoration of a forest degraded by exceptional snowfall
  • Planting period: autumn/Winter 2018-2019

Context and benefits

Located in the Livradois Forez Regional Nature Park, the trees in these plots have been devastated by heavy snowfalls.  Indeed, from 29 to 30 October 2018, large quantities of snow fell on the department of Puy-de-Dôme, causing thousands of trees to fall. The damage was reported by the newspaper La Montagne on 2 November, which reminds us that these tree falls blocked dozens of roads and deprived 54,000 homes of electricity.  The daily goes back to the probable causes that can explain the extent of the damage to trees. First, past droughts that weaken the resistance of trees. During severe and prolonged droughts, plants continue to sweat, but no longer find the necessary water supply in the soil to produce sap. Air bubbles then form in the channels, blocking the circulation of sap. These parts become devitalized and brittle. On the other hand, the snow weighed on the trees that still had part of their leaves, the wind blowing to finish causing some of them to fall.

The project is being carried out on plots previously populated with degraded fir and spruce trees. Spruce and Douglas fir, perfectly adapted to the soil conditions, will therefore be planted in a mixture by strip.
