Project description

Reforest'Action and Sylva Nova invite you to participate in supporting the natural regeneration present in this foundation-managed forest, which has suffered from storms, diseases and pests.

The project at a glance

  • Number of trees to be financed: 52,500
  • Area of the operation: 35 hectares
  • Main species promoted: ash, oak, chestnut, maple, hazelnut
  • Type of project: support for on-site natural regeneration
  • Regeneration season: Spring 2022-2023

The origin of the project

The Stanstead forest, which welcomes thousands of visitors each year, covers more than 1600 hectares. Affected by successive storms, diseases and pests, it is now weakened. The majority of the oak and chestnut trees, which make up the bulk of the stand, are currently affected by chalarosis, a disease caused by a pathogenic fungus. As for the young seedlings, they are struggling to regenerate under the pressure of game, which endangers the future of the forest.

In order to restore the forest, important planting and natural regeneration works are undertaken. Each year, throughout the project, tens of thousands of trees will be introduced to ensure the renewal of the forest ecosystem. Diversified species, adapted to the climatic conditions of the region, will be planted to give life to a perennial and resilient massif. At the same time, silviculture work is carried out on the young shoots to accompany the regeneration of the stand and the renewal of the forest. To protect the trees from deer, sheaths are also installed around the seedlings. Eventually, the Stanstead forest will regain its full vigour and be able to continue to fulfill its environmental, landscape, social and economic functions.
