Forest restoration and creation
This planting project is being carried out on several plots of land located in different communes in Gironde and Landes.

New Aquitaine has around 2.8 million hectares of forest, or 16.5% of the total woodland area in mainland France. Its forests make it the French region with the most oak and chestnut trees. The coniferous population is also well represented, with 30% of its surface area covered by maritime pine.
Between 23 and 25 January 2009, storm Klaus hit. The storm claimed several lives and left more than a million homes without electricity, devastating parts of the forests of south-west France, Spain and Italy. Nearly 10 years on, the damage caused by this natural disaster is still visible and requires replanting.
Maritime pine is the predominant species in the Landes de Gascogne forest, with 85% of the one and a half million hectares planted with maritime pine. This species is particularly well adapted to the mild oceanic climate, and despite the risk of violent winds and early or late frosts, it remains the only species that can grow well on sandy, acid soils that are poor in mineral elements, often dry in summer and waterlogged in winter.
