Forest restoration and creation
This project is taking place in the Kootenai National Forest in Montana, USA.

In 2017, multiple wildfires merged to create the Highway 200 Complex Fire. The fires burned across thousands of acres of habitat, consuming the forest floor and trees throughout its reach. Located in the Northwest corner of Montana and spilling into Northeast Idaho, Kootenai National Forest has been touched by this fire. This forest includes the Cabinet-Yaak Ecosystem, one of only a handful of areas where grizzly bears remain today. However Grizzly bear population estimates in the Cabinat-Yaak remain low and fragmented, and this project will improve vital habitat for the threatened species, helping to support overall recovery efforts.
To help restore the forest, we will plant multiple species of native pine, larch, and spruce, improving soil stability and wildlife habitat. In addition to this reconstruction of habitats, the plantation and its future forest will have an impact on water quality. Indeed, the National Forest is crossed by rivers that supply in drinking water many cities around. Finally, the project will restore local landscape and allow hikers to come back and enjoy this unique place.
