Usambara - Tanzania
Forest restoration and creation
Reforest'Action has joined forces with Friends of Usambara to restore the biodiversity of the Usambara Mountains, raise awareness among local populations of the importance of forests and agroforestry, and support them in the sustainable management of their trees.

Between 1990 and 2010, Tanzania lost 19.4% of its forest area, or around 8 million hectares. Today, it is still one of the world's most deforested countries, with 400,000 hectares of forest destroyed every year. This is due to the expansion of agricultural and grazing land to the detriment of forests, felling for charcoal and firewood production, and forest fires caused by industrial activities.

Through this reforestation project, 204 villages and their inhabitants are mobilized to nursery seedlings during the dry seasons (January-February and September-October) and to plant trees during the rest of the year. The nurseries are set up in 4 schools and form part of the forest protection education program for schoolchildren involved in the project. They serve as science laboratories for the pupils, who are introduced to environmental protection, botany and horticulture, and put their lessons into practice by taking part in the nursery work. After planting, the trees are monitored by experts from Friends of Usambara to ensure their healthy growth.
