Résumé du projet
The project is implemented in the Pieria mountains in Greece, in the heart of a large pine forest of 20 000 hectares mostly made up of Scots pine. For more than 30 years, parts of the forest have shown signs of decline because of the serious and repeated attacks of fungi and pests. These attacks are even more serious as the trees are weakened by repeated droughts and heatwaves. Moreover, the area has been largely grazed in the past by semi-wild goat herds, which maintained an important pressure on the species' regeneration. The FRI (Forest Research Institute) favors regeneration through scarification (superficial combing of the soil) which helps seeds regrowth and germination. This method is combined with the closure of these areas in order to protect the juvenile stages from the goats. In the long run, the trees will store carbon in the wood.

Contexte local

Over the last three decades, pine dieback has been reported in the Pieria mountains due to fungal attack. The increase in these necrotic phenomena and the inability of old stands to regenerate naturally are a major concern for the local forestry service. In view of the threat of climate change, this stand, which is almost 140 years old, is undergoing natural regeneration support.

Actions sur le terrain

- Manual clearing: eliminating vegetation that competes with young plants.

- Chipping of logging and forestry tracks.

- Enrichment of the regeneration plantation with 9,000 seedlings.

Impact
CLIMAT
Contributes to the mitigation of the greenhouse effect and influences precipitation patterns and the local microclimate.
BIODIVERSITÉ
Preservation of local biodiversity by providing suitable habitats and resources.
EAU ET SOLS
Influences the quality and integrity of the soil-water system, and the cycling of water and nutrients.
SOCIAL & ÉCONOMIQUE
Supports human well-being, by providing resources, income, education, and supporting recreation and heritage.
