Mangrove
Reforest’action is collaborating with Yakopi (Yayasan Konservasi Pesisir Indonesia) to restore mangrove forests in areas with previous degradation and deforestation, by involving community participation in Aceh and North Sumatra provinces, Indonesia.

The impact of climate change in Aceh and the North Sumatra region is detrimental, thus some natural disasters frequently occur. In 2004, the impact of the tsunami waves due to the absence of barriers from mangrove plants that can prevent waves from entering land, causing high material losses and deaths of people living in coastal areas of Aceh and parts of North Sumatra and worse again the loss of Tapak Kuda Island in Langkat-North Sumatra was due to the absence of mangroves consequently the beach that could tie up the land was not function properly, so that the land collapsed into the ocean. Besides, lack of mangroves caused more ocean abrasion, floodings, and seawater intrusion in these regions, causing more susceptible to environmental and community. Additionally, sea level rise also caused the negative impact on local biodiversity.

Restoring Mangrove Forest: Our partners initially assess the suitability of lands for restoration, then administer a series of training on the nursery and planting mangroves and its growth monitoring. Through a participatory approach, mobilizing local communities to support mangrove restoration, assisting the monitoring through mobile apps, and collaborating in community-based mangrove patrolling units to protect the mangrove. The species planning includes Rhizophora stylosa, Rhizophora Apiculata, Rhizophora Mucronata, Bruguiera gymnorhiza, Ceriops tagal, and Sonneratia alba; which are exclusively selected according to habitat suitability for planting. Developing mangrove-based socio-economic program: The community development program is also developed in the context of a restoration program to improve the community's economic well-being. The activities include village stakeholder engagements, Women-Lead Mangrove Base Productions by Nypa fruticans sugar productions & Sea-Food Crackers Production. Moreover, mangrove ecotourism is also developed, as well as the mangrove's sylvofisheries. Furthermore, an awareness program for youth is also administered, etc.
