Résumé du projet
The trees to be planted here will help prevent soil erosion by wind and water, and increase the rate of rainfall absorption. Mediterranean cork oak forests act as a barrier against the advancing process of desertification. What's more, a harvested cork oak stores up to five times more carbon than an unharvested tree, as the tree uses additional carbon in the regeneration of its bark. Every year, cork oak forests absorb 10 million tonnes of CO2. The cork oak is also a key species in its role as a passive pyrophyte. Thanks to its thick layer of bark, it acts as a "firewall" and is able to resist flames and regenerate itself thanks to its high level of resilience.

Sur le terrain
Contexte local

These plots are located in degraded areas in terms of soil condition, erosion due to high slopes and poor cultural practices that have depleted the soil over the last century. These former monocultures will be diversified with traditional forest species through planting and natural regeneration. The cork oak is part of Portugal's national heritage. Indeed, Portugal is home to the world's largest collection of cork oaks and is also the world leader in cork production. But Portugal is also home to monoculture plantations of eucalyptus, which have degraded the soil.
