Velaines - France
Forest restoration and creation
This reforestation project is taking place in Velaines, in the Meuse département.

This forest is located 15 kilometres south-east of Bar-le-Duc, the capital of the Meuse department. The project is located in the sylvoecoregion of the limestone plateaux of the north-east, and more specifically in the Barrois region.
With 227,300 hectares of woodland, the forest covers 37% of the land area, putting the Meuse département above the national average of 31%.
Meuse's forests break down as follows: 23% state-owned forests, 46% communal forests with 434 forest communes, i.e. 90% of Meuse's communes, and 31% private forests.
Meuse's forests are particularly renowned for the quality of their hardwoods (Beech and Oak), which account for 80% of the surface area. The harvest is used to produce timber (26%), industrial wood (62%) and firewood (12%). The local timber industry comprises 59 companies, providing 521 jobs. The department's forests are highly fragmented and difficult to exploit.
