Salles-Lavalette - France
Assisted natural regeneration
This project, located at Salles-Lavalette in Charente, aims to regenerate a diverse ecosystem.

Situated in Salles-Lavalette, in the south of the Charente, this project is set in a hilly, green landscape. The village, which is committed to preserving the environment, is also the centre of an important cultural heritage.
The Charente department is located in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, which has a very dynamic forestry and timber industry. It is ranked first in terms of the quantity of wood harvested in mainland France.
The Charente's forests are characterised by their diversity: there are maritime pine forests in the south, chestnut coppice forests in the north in the Ruffécois area, not to mention oak and poplar stands. These different forest landscapes cover almost a quarter of the département and play an active role in the production of wood as a renewable energy source.
The silvicultural actions of Assisted Natural Regeneration take place over several years for this project:
- To begin with, pathways called "cloisonnements" are opened up. By allowing controlled movement through the forest, they prevent soil compaction throughout the plot.
- A garden cut is also planned, removing a maximum of one third of the trees and leaving sufficient space and light for regeneration to develop.
- Similarly, targeted thinning of native species will take place every 8 to 12 years in the coming years, depending on the vigour of the stand.
