Résumé du projet
The aim of this project is to re-establish forest vegetation in an area of the Aveyron region where conditions are particularly harsh. The original Weymouth pines had to be felled in 2020 following a storm. Situated on the top of a hump, the plot is battered by the winds and surrounded by plains. It's hot and dry, and the soil is particularly shallow. It is difficult to find tree species that can withstand these conditions, where there is little natural regeneration. After several unsuccessful attempts, the owner wanted to use species adapted to the Mediterranean context, which would recreate a forest atmosphere and gradually encourage the return of more diverse species. Once restored, the forest will help combat climate change by storing atmospheric carbon. The newly planted trees will recreate areas for biodiversity while improving the structure and fertility of the soil.

Contexte local

This project is located in the Aveyron department, close to the Monts de Lacaune Regional Nature Park. Aveyron is a department with very little woodland, mainly because of the harsh conditions it faces. Aveyron's forests are mainly made up of deciduous trees, oaks and beeches. The 20% of coniferous trees are mostly Douglas fir, pine and fir. Aveyron's forests are highly fragmented, and 90% of them are held by private owners, often with plots of less than 4 hectares.

Actions sur le terrain

In order to preserve the potential of the plot and optimise the success of the plantation, the soil was only scarified. Clearing was carried out along the plantation lines, but spontaneous regeneration will be preserved if it does not hinder the proper development of the planted trees. The stand will be managed as an irregular high forest.

Impact
CLIMAT
Contributes to the mitigation of the greenhouse effect and influences precipitation patterns and the local microclimate.
BIODIVERSITÉ
Preservation of local biodiversity by providing suitable habitats and resources.
EAU ET SOLS
Influences the quality and integrity of the soil-water system, and the cycling of water and nutrients.
SOCIAL & ÉCONOMIQUE
Supports human well-being, by providing resources, income, education, and supporting recreation and heritage.
