Résumé du projet
The aim of this project is to restore a plot of bark-affected monospecific spruce trees. Like agriculture, monoculture impoverishes the soil, weakens biodiversity and increases the vulnerability of stands to hazards. In this case, it was a beetle, the bark beetle, that caused a massive decline in the existing stand. Populations of this beetle have exploded in recent years, particularly as a result of excessively mild winters. Two coniferous species will be introduced, but it is particularly important to note the introduction of deciduous trees such as beech and sycamore maple, which are naturally occurring species that are particularly well adapted to the soil and climate. The aim of this new afforestation is to increase the resilience potential of the forest massif of which it forms part, and to allow diversity to return to the massif.

Contexte local

The project is rooted in the west of the Grand Duchy, in the Oesling region near Redange and the Belgian border. Luxembourg has 34.8% forest cover, covering just over 90,000 hectares. These are spread across the four major ecological zones of the Oesling, Gutland, Moselle and Minette.

Over the course of the 20th century, Luxembourg was heavily planted with spruce, a resinous species favoured for the technological characteristics of its wood and its ability to grow quickly. Unfortunately, the spruce was planted as a monoculture and in recent years the bark beetle has decimated most of the stands. This is an unprecedented disaster for Luxembourg and European forests.

Actions sur le terrain

- Restoring the ecosystem after a bark beetle attack

- Maintaining forest cover

- Diversification by planting adapted hardwood and softwood species
