Kassandria - Greece
Forest restoration and creation
The aim of this project, located in Sani in Greece, is to restore this remarkable dune forest.

The project is rooted in the Cassandra peninsula to the south-east of Thessaloniki, in a Natura 2000 area. This coastal area is characterised by marshes, dunes, reeds, scrub and ancient Aleppo pine forests. It offers a diversity of habitats and resting places for numerous species of birds, some of which are migratory, as well as essential habitats for local aquatic species. Aleppo pine forests play a crucial role in protecting the soil against erosion, thanks to their roots and foliage, which reduce the impact of rainfall.
The Aleppo pine is widespread around the Mediterranean, particularly in Greece, but its survival is threatened by fires, storms and climate change.
Natural regeneration silvicultural work takes place over several years:
- Identification of areas to be regenerated;
- Collection of cones from the most viable seed trees;
- Planting seeds in nurseries;
- Selection of young seedlings and planting in the gaps left by the storm;
- Scientific monitoring.
