Résumé du projet
This project, located in the Castilla y León region of northern Spain, aims to reintroduce woodland to former sloping agricultural areas. The plots on which the planting is taking place were once pastureland, abandoned several decades ago. Unfortunately, the natural vegetation has not been able to re-colonise the wasteland, as the surrounding area consists solely of cultivated fields, which are poor in biodiversity. The main aim of this project is to accelerate the natural dynamic by planting hardy species capable of attracting wildlife and living in difficult conditions, while maintaining the sparse vegetation already present on the site. In the same spirit, the planting is not organised in rows, but the young trees are distributed randomly to mimic the natural distribution of forests. As the region is heavily affected by rural exodus, these forests could provide a new source of local employment, in addition to the many other benefits for the local population and biodiversity.
Principales essences :

Sur le terrain
Contexte local

Located in a very agricultural area, Espinosilla de San Bartolome has just a few buildings before being surrounded by fields. The climate is continental and Mediterranean, with harsh winters and hot summers, interspersed with three to four months of complete drought.

Actions sur le terrain

To begin with, the tree and shrub vegetation already present in this degraded ecosystem is identified and preserved. Using a mechanical shovel, posts are then dug at random before the young trees are collected. Over the next few years, clearance work will be carried out to contain competing vegetation and encourage natural regeneration to develop. No timber harvesting is planned for this project, apart from management operations and fire-fighting pruning.
