Mercoeur - France
Forest restoration and creation
This reforestation project at Mercoeur, in the Haute-Loire region of France, concerns an area of woodland that used to be a monospecific stand of spruces, but which has been seriously affected by the bark beetle.

The granite plateaux in the centre of the Massif Central are characterised by geological formations dominated by granite. These plateaux have moderate altitudes and a relatively uniform relief, favouring varied climatic conditions. The soils, which are often shallow and acidic, support vegetation consisting mainly of coniferous and deciduous forests, as well as moorland and meadows. This region is essential for biodiversity, home to numerous plant and animal species adapted to local conditions. Human activities, particularly agriculture and forestry, play a key role in the management and conservation of these natural landscapes.
