Leonessa - Italy
Assisted natural regeneration
This RNA project in Leonessa, in Italy, aims to renaturalize an artificial pine forest, transforming it into a mixed forest dominated by native hardwood species.

Leonessa's forests are closely linked to the history and socio-economic events of the local population. After the Second World War, their management was focused on the exercise of civic rights to wood and pasture, as well as the operation of a wood-processing company, active until 1979. The current forestry plan, drawn up in 2016, focuses on a more conscious multifunctional development, integrating economic, hydrogeological, landscape, historical, cultural, scientific, tourism and climatic aspects. This approach aims to recognize and reinforce the multiple functions of sylvo-pastoral ecosystems, beyond simple timber production.
The silvicultural measures for natural regeneration will take place over several years:
2024-2025 :
- Preliminary study, design and creation of a sampling area where trees to be felled will be marked, then felled by the contracting company, followed by an inspection by the forester.
2025-2026 :
- Identification and selection of trees to be felled, free thinning ;
- Thinning of the pine forest by felling decaying trees.
2026-2028 :
- Monitoring of natural regeneration.
