Résumé du projet
The assisted natural regeneration project at Alagna Valsesia in Piedmont aims to restore one of the rare fir forests in Valsesia, which was severely damaged by a waterspout on 23 December 2023. The aim is to diversify the composition and structure of this forest to make it more resilient to climatic extremes, while increasing biodiversity. The difficult access to the area, which is only possible on foot, and the impracticality of traditional logging, mean that significant support is needed to overcome these challenges and preserve this region, which is popular for ‘slow tourism’. The project also includes measures to limit the damage caused by the bark beetle. The newly planted trees will recreate areas for biodiversity while combating climate change by storing atmospheric carbon.Principales essences :
Fagus sylvatica, Sorbus aucuparia, Laburnum anagyroides, Betula pendula, Larix decidua, Fraxinus excelsior

Sur le terrain
Contexte local
The area extends from 1,300 to over 1,800 metres altitude, in the heart of a coniferous forest dominated by spruce and larch. In the lower parts of the valley, there is a significant presence of beech and mesophilous deciduous trees. As you climb higher, the forest gradually gives way to alpine pastures.
Actions sur le terrain
The silvicultural measures for natural regeneration will take place over several years:
2024-2026 :
- Restoration work on forests damaged by bad weather consisting of cleaning up the plot (cutting out irrecoverable vegetation, delimbing, peeling and appropriate arrangement of branches...)
2026-2028:
- Enrichment planting of seedlings of all species and ages: planting to improve the density or diversity of an existing stand or an area where natural regeneration is not present.
- Protection
- Plantation maintenance
Impact
CLIMAT
Contributes to the mitigation of the greenhouse effect and influences precipitation patterns and the local microclimate.
BIODIVERSITÉ
Preservation of local biodiversity by providing suitable habitats and resources.
EAU ET SOLS
Influences the quality and integrity of the soil-water system, and the cycling of water and nutrients.
SOCIAL & ÉCONOMIQUE
Supports human well-being, by providing resources, income, education, and supporting recreation and heritage.
