Résumé du projet
The aim of this project is to restore a monospecific plot of spruce affected by a devastating insect, the bark beetle. As in agriculture, monoculture impoverishes soils, weakens biodiversity and increases the vulnerability of stands to climatic and biotic hazards. In this case, it was a beetle, the bark beetle, that caused a massive decline in the existing stand. Beetle populations in the project area have risen sharply in recent years, mainly due to increasingly mild winters. Three softwood species will be introduced as part of the project. However, it is particularly important to note the reintroduction of broadleaved trees such as beech, a species that occurs naturally in the region and is particularly well adapted to the local soil and climate. The aim of this reforestation is to increase the resilience potential of the forest and to allow the diversity of flora and fauna to return to the forest.

Sur le terrain
Contexte local

This project is rooted in south-west Germany, not far from the Belgian border, in the Eifel, a very hilly area where forests alternate with agricultural land. During the twentieth century, the region was heavily forested through the mass planting of spruce, a resinous species popular for the technological characteristics of its wood and its ability to grow quickly. Unfortunately, because spruce was planted as a monoculture, the bark beetle decimated most of the stands. This is an unprecedented disaster for German and European forests.

Actions sur le terrain
  • Restoring the ecosystem after a bark beetle attack;
  • Maintenance of the forest cover;
  • Diversification by planting 4 softwood and hardwood species adapted to the local context.
Impact
CLIMAT
Contributes to the mitigation of the greenhouse effect and influences precipitation patterns and the local microclimate.
BIODIVERSITÉ
Preservation of local biodiversity by providing suitable habitats and resources.
EAU ET SOLS
Influences the quality and integrity of the soil-water system, and the cycling of water and nutrients.
SOCIAL & ÉCONOMIQUE
Supports human well-being, by providing resources, income, education, and supporting recreation and heritage.
