Résumé du projet
The project involves reforesting a plot of land that has been cleared after successive attacks by bark beetles (insect pests). The first wave appeared in 2020 in a very localised fashion and plot 721 could not be conserved. An island also had to be felled on plot 869. The second wave of bark beetles in 2022 led to the clear-cutting of half of the remaining stand on plot 869. To prevent such events from happening again, it has been decided to plant 3 native hardwood species, which will undoubtedly be supported by the natural regeneration that will come from the neighbouring stands, which are still standing and more diversified. In the medium and long term, the forest will be more resilient and will host more biodiversity. The newly planted trees will also help to combat global warming by storing carbon in the atmosphere.Principales essences :
Quercus petraea, Fagus sylvatica, Betula pendula

Sur le terrain
Contexte local
Luxembourg has 35% of its surface area covered by forests. Sustainable forest management is a priority, involving both the State and private owners. However, biodiversity conservation, urban pressure, climate change and forest management are major concerns. Urban pressure is significant, leading to the fragmentation of habitats. In addition, the region was heavily forested in the 20th century, with large areas of spruce monoculture.

Impact
CLIMAT
Contributes to the mitigation of the greenhouse effect and influences precipitation patterns and the local microclimate.
BIODIVERSITÉ
Preservation of local biodiversity by providing suitable habitats and resources.
EAU ET SOLS
Influences the quality and integrity of the soil-water system, and the cycling of water and nutrients.
SOCIAL & ÉCONOMIQUE
Supports human well-being, by providing resources, income, education, and supporting recreation and heritage.
