Escombres-et-le-Chesnois - France
Forest restoration and creation
This project, located in the commune of Escombres-et-le-Chesnois, was a former spruce monoculture that was decimated by bark beetles (insect pests).

Escombres-et-le-Chesnois is surrounded by a dense forest landscape typical of the Ardennes. The forest around the village is mainly made up of deciduous trees (beech, oak and hornbeam) and a few coniferous trees. It forms part of the wider forest massif of the French Ardennes, which extends into Belgium. This forest plays an essential ecological role, providing a home for a wide variety of wildlife, including deer, wild boar, foxes and many species of birds. It is also crossed by a number of small rivers, contributing to the Meuse catchment area. The region is characterised by its undulating topography, dense forests and mixed oceanic climate with continental influences. The region has a long tradition of farming and forestry, with a rich historical heritage dating back to the medieval period and the conflicts of the 19th and 20th centuries.
