Dans le département de la Lozère (Occitanie), ce projet se situe sur le plateau de l’Aubrac, à 1250m d’altitude. Les épicéas peuplant ces parcelles plantées en monoculture, ont largement souffert des dernières sécheresses estivales, et présentaient des signes alarmant de dépérissement. Par conséquence, une coupe d’urgence a été réalisée, amenant à reboiser les 12 hectares sinistrés. Constitués d’une majorité de hêtres accompagnés de diverses essences d’altitude, les arbres sont mélangés aléatoirement. À terme, cette forêt apportera une forte diversification dans ce massif majoritairement planté en résineux depuis 50 ans. La plantation de 24 275 arbres permettra de stocker du CO2, de filtrer l’eau et de restaurer l’ambiance forestière sur la zone. Finalement, cette démarche contribuera à la préservation des sols et de la faune et flore locale.

In the Lozère department (Occitanie), this project is located on the Aubrac plateau, at an altitude of 1250m. The spruce trees on these monoculture plots had suffered greatly during the recent summer droughts, and were showing alarming signs of decay. As a result, an emergency cut was carried out, leading to the reforestation of the 12 hectares affected. Comprising a majority of beech trees, along with various high-altitude species, the trees are randomly mixed. Ultimately, this forest will bring a high degree of diversification to a massif that has been planted mainly with resinous trees for the past 50 years. The planting of 24,275 trees will store CO2, filter water and restore the forest atmosphere in the area. Last but not least, it will help preserve the soil and local flora and fauna.

Reforest'Action is partnering with the High Atlas Foundation in collaboration with the Moroccan Department of Water and Forests to contribute to the resilience of the ecosystems as well as the economic development of the local populations. 

To do this, 300,000 trees are planted over two years. This approach will help meet
the objectives set by the Moroccan Ministry of Agriculture, which plans to plant one billion trees to alleviate the systemic poverty that plagues Moroccan rural communities. The planting of fruit trees will revitalize agroecosystems and further develop fruit production by planting species native to the region.

In Morocco, climate change and the hazards it causes, such as droughts, considerably weaken the agroecosystems in the north-western part of the country. In this region known for its arboriculture, but dominated by cereal farming, agricultural practices also contribute to deteriorating soils and polluting ecosystems. Families of small-scale producers are particularly vulnerable on the social and economic level. Indeed, illiteracy and the lack of access to communication technologies contribute to the vulnerability of the inhabitants of this mountainous area. Today, the major challenge is to restore Taza's agroecosystems, in order to mitigate the effects of climate change and empower farmers.

The High Atlas Foundation is a Moroccan association and an American NGO, founded in 2000 by former Peace Corps volunteers committed to sustainable development. HAF supports Moroccan communities in implementing development initiatives that promote organic agriculture, women's autonomy, education, youth integration, and population health. Since 2011, the association has acquired the status of consultant in the United Nations Economic and Social Council. HAF has planted nearly 4 million fruit trees in 39 provinces of Morocco, benefiting 15,000 producer families. 

In the province of Taza, Reforest'Action is partnering with the High Atlas Foundation to involve women's communities in the development of agroforestry.  The project, carried out in collaboration with the Moroccan Department of Water and Forests, is designed to produce and distribute 400,000 fruit trees to 3,000 local farmers over two years. Through the development of agroforestry, the project aims to support the transition from a monospecific cereal crop to a surplus of organic fruits. This approach will help meet the objectives set by the Moroccan Ministry of Agriculture, which plans to plant one billion trees to alleviate the systemic poverty that plagues Moroccan rural communities. A double impact, both environmental and socio-economic, is expected from this regenerative project, which allows to improve the living conditions of local communities through the sale of fruits from the trees, a source of additional income.

Reforest’Action is partnering with the NGO Inter Aide to plant 300,000 trees over three years to form hedgerows in several villages of the Lilongwe district, center of the country. In this rural area where human activities have severely degraded the forest, agroecosystems must be restored to ensure the subsistence of local communities. 

This approach will increase the energy autonomy and the standard of living of the inhabitants of the reforested areas. The trees planted will have environmental benefits: they will prevent soil erosion, restore their fertility and their ecosystem functions.

In Malawi, deforestation is responsible for the loss of approximately 33,000 hectares of forest every year. In this country where subsistence farming is the norm, the forest cover is disappearing to make way for crops. In addition, logging practices in order to meet the population’s energy needs, illegal wood trafficking, coupled with the effects of global warming, are endangering the forest as well as people’s resilience. Yet, trees are a precious and necessary resource for the population, whose density continues to grow.

Founded in 1980, Inter Aide's main objective is to design, launch and monitor concrete development aid programmes in six African countries and in Haiti. Since 1997, the organisation has been training rural communities in Malawi to create tree nurseries and plant trees.

Plot farming in Peru represents the first cause of deforestation, being practiced both by small family farmers and by national and international agribusinesses. Northwest of the country, in the heart of the Peruvian Amazon, most of the land of the Lamas, San Martín and El Dorado provinces have been converted into crops and pastures, at the cost of the primary forest that used to take root in the area. Local farmers have been abandoning their plots of land whose overexploited soil had lost fertility. The abandoned farmlands are now largely covered by an invasive fern species. These degraded areas are also particularly prone to fires, which are very common in the Amazon during the summer. Like a vicious circle, these phenomena worsen the degradation of the already weakened soils and decrease water resources.

The Center for Innovation and Sustainable Management (CIGDES) is a Peruvian NGO founded in 2020\. On the spot, the organization favors the development of agroforestry projects based on the introduction of non-timber and fruit indigenous tree species. Since its creation, the CIGDES has managed to plant over 10 million trees. The NGO works hand in hand with several national and international actors involved in the restoration of forests and the implementation of agroforestry systems such as the US AID.

Reforest'Action is partnering with the CIGDES to support small landowners in implementing agroforestry systems. The project, led by the Centro De Innovación Y Gestión Para El Desarrollo Sostenible (CIGDES) in the field, is being carried out simultaneously in three Peruvian provinces: Lamas, San Martín and El Dorado. Started in 2021, it will last for three years. The work involves installing agroforestry systems on abandoned agricultural plots, alongside producers and indigenous communities. The development of agroforestry will result in the restoration of former forests, including soil conditions, while generating additional socio-economic benefits. The Kichwas are an ancestral ethnic group of the Andes found in Peru. Direct descendants of the Inca civilization, their society is essentially based on agriculture and livestock. That's why the trees planted in agroforestry within the framework of the project will participate in the economic development of these Amazon people.

Reforest'Action is partnering with Rioterra, to implement a reforestation project in the State of Rondônia, in the southwest of the Brazilian Amazon. This state is part of the “deforestation arc” formed by vast territories where the agricultural frontier and deforestation have greatly increased in recent decades. The aim of this project is to restore forest reserves by full stand plantations in areas that will compose the future Amazon Bioeconomy and Conservation Center – ABCC. The project also aims to recover the original forest landscape and to promote the recovery and preservation of the Amazonian biodiversity, in addition to generating income for the neighboring population.
