Au nord de la Corrèze, cette forêt dépérissante est fortement menacée par l’absence de signe de régénération naturelle. Sans aide, ce peuplement ne pourra donc pas accueillir d’arbres plus jeunes qui diversifieraient la forêt, tout en prenant le relais des vieux arbres affaiblis. Les 3 250 arbres plantés compenseront alors ce manque de jeunes plants. Cette démarche diversifiera le peuplement grâce à cette nouvelle génération, qui favorisera aussi le développement d’une biodiversité. La restauration de cet écosystème permettra de limiter les glissements de terrain, protégeant ainsi le sol de la parcelle et sa richesse. Par ailleurs, cette forêt aura aussi un intérêt pédagogique, en montrant les bonnes pratiques sylvicoles. Les arbres plantés stockeront aussi du carbone, participant ainsi à la lutte contre le dérèglement climatique.

In the north of the Corrèze department, this dying forest is seriously threatened by the absence of any sign of natural regeneration. Without help, this stand will not be able to support younger trees that would diversify the forest, while taking over from the old, weakened trees. The 3,250 trees planted will compensate for this lack of young trees. This approach will diversify the stand thanks to this new generation, which will also encourage the development of biodiversity. The restoration of this ecosystem will limit landslides, protecting the soil of the plot and its richness. The forest will also be of educational interest, demonstrating good silvicultural practices. The trees planted will also store carbon, helping to combat climate change.

Spekboom

Reforest’Action is joining forces with C4 EcoSolutions and AfriCarbon, two South African companies into the protected reserves of Kuzuko and Koedoeskloof. The goal is to restore these ecosystems by planting more than 500,000 seeds of Spekboom, a local species which is essential to the ecological functioning of the region. The project will develop a new sustainable grazing management system to improve the carrying capacity of livestock without degrading the environment. Numerous benefits will also be generated: the return of biodiversity, including a population of elephants, rainwater infiltration improvement, restoration of arable land and improve the living conditions of the local populations.

Within the Eastern Cape, in South Africa, land desertification is due to the increasing pressure of livestock on pastureland. Nowadays, the increasing scarcity of vegetation cover and the degradation of local farmers’ land and surrounding reserves are causing many negative environmental effects, such as the drying up of water resources, loss of biodiversity and soil erosion. The plantation areas are made up of former degraded pastures, and are located close to areas that have been protected for several decades.

The project is led in the field by Anthony Mills, a geochemist and expert in environmental development projects. He is the founder of two companies, AfriCarbon in 2009 and C4 EcoSolutions in 2015, which ensure the technical and operational deployment of the project.
