Situé au Portugal, dans la ville de Cardigos, ce projet a pour objectif de reboiser une ancienne monoculture de résineux qui a subi un incendie en 2019. Le propriétaire souhaite reconstituer un patrimoine arboré en plantant plus de 15 000 arbres feuillus et résineux. Ces différentes essences sont adaptées au sol et aux conditions de la station, rendant ainsi la forêt plus résistante face aux aléas extérieurs. À terme, cette forêt constituera un lieu d'accueil pour la biodiversité environnante et permettra d'améliorer la structure et la fertilité des sols agricoles de la zone. Par ailleurs, les arbres plantés stockeront du carbone, participant ainsi à la lutte contre le changement climatique. Enfin, les arbres plantés assureront également une continuité forestière et participeront pleinement à la formation d’un patrimoine forestier.

Located in the Portuguese town of Cardigos, this project aims to reforest a previous resinous monoculture damaged by fire in 2015. 
By planting 15,537 trees of different species, both deciduous and resinous, the owner would like to reconstitute a tree legacy that is more resistant to hazards. 
Eventually, the reconstituted forest will provide shelter for local biodiversity and help improve the structure and fertility of the surrounding agricultural soil. The planted trees will absorb carbon and help with the fight against climate change. Lastly, they will ensure forest continuity and will contribute to the creation of a forest heritage.

Reforest'Action is partnering with the High Atlas Foundation in collaboration with the Moroccan Department of Water and Forests to contribute to the resilience of the ecosystems as well as the economic development of the local populations. 

To do this, 300,000 trees are planted over two years. This approach will help meet
the objectives set by the Moroccan Ministry of Agriculture, which plans to plant one billion trees to alleviate the systemic poverty that plagues Moroccan rural communities. The planting of fruit trees will revitalize agroecosystems and further develop fruit production by planting species native to the region.

In Morocco, climate change and the hazards it causes, such as droughts, considerably weaken the agroecosystems in the north-western part of the country. In this region known for its arboriculture, but dominated by cereal farming, agricultural practices also contribute to deteriorating soils and polluting ecosystems. Families of small-scale producers are particularly vulnerable on the social and economic level. Indeed, illiteracy and the lack of access to communication technologies contribute to the vulnerability of the inhabitants of this mountainous area. Today, the major challenge is to restore Taza's agroecosystems, in order to mitigate the effects of climate change and empower farmers.

The High Atlas Foundation is a Moroccan association and an American NGO, founded in 2000 by former Peace Corps volunteers committed to sustainable development. HAF supports Moroccan communities in implementing development initiatives that promote organic agriculture, women's autonomy, education, youth integration, and population health. Since 2011, the association has acquired the status of consultant in the United Nations Economic and Social Council. HAF has planted nearly 4 million fruit trees in 39 provinces of Morocco, benefiting 15,000 producer families. 

In the province of Taza, Reforest'Action is partnering with the High Atlas Foundation to involve women's communities in the development of agroforestry.  The project, carried out in collaboration with the Moroccan Department of Water and Forests, is designed to produce and distribute 400,000 fruit trees to 3,000 local farmers over two years. Through the development of agroforestry, the project aims to support the transition from a monospecific cereal crop to a surplus of organic fruits. This approach will help meet the objectives set by the Moroccan Ministry of Agriculture, which plans to plant one billion trees to alleviate the systemic poverty that plagues Moroccan rural communities. A double impact, both environmental and socio-economic, is expected from this regenerative project, which allows to improve the living conditions of local communities through the sale of fruits from the trees, a source of additional income.

Ce projet de reconstitution de massifs forestiers dévastés par l'incendie prend racine en Algarve. L'incendie qui y a fait rage en 2018 fait partie d'une longue série de feux. L'impact de ces incendies a été amplifié par le manque de moyens et des pratiques sylvicoles non adaptées. Avec des centaines de milliers d'hectares de forêts sinistrées, la tâche est immense. Une prise de conscience anime les autorités et les propriétaires forestiers afin d'adapter leur gestion forestière. Et pour cause : ceux-ci seront dans les années à venir de plus en plus important du fait du réchauffement climatique. Ce projet repose sur la plantation de 387 399 arbres sur 270 hectares en 3 ans afin de restaurer le peuplement dégradé. Un objectif de diversification des essences traditionnelles régionales, en plantant à une densité de 1250 arbres par hectares.

This project to restore forest areas devastated by fire has its roots in the Algarve. The fire that raged there in 2018 is part of a long series of fires. The impact of these fires was amplified by a lack of resources and unsuitable silvicultural practices. With hundreds of thousands of hectares of forest affected, the task ahead is immense. The authorities and forest owners are becoming increasingly aware of the need to adapt their forest management practices. And with good reason: in the years to come, these will be increasingly important due to global warming. The project involves planting 387,399 trees on 270 hectares over 3 years to restore the degraded stand. The aim is to diversify traditional regional tree species, planting at a density of 1,250 trees per hectare.

Reforest’Action is joining forces with C4 EcoSolutions and AfriCarbon, two South African companies into the protected reserves of Kuzuko and Koedoeskloof. The goal is to restore these ecosystems by planting more than 500,000 seeds of Spekboom, a local species which is essential to the ecological functioning of the region. The project will develop a new sustainable grazing management system to improve the carrying capacity of livestock without degrading the environment. Numerous benefits will also be generated: the return of biodiversity, including a population of elephants, rainwater infiltration improvement, restoration of arable land and improve the living conditions of the local populations.

Within the Eastern Cape, in South Africa, land desertification is due to the increasing pressure of livestock on pastureland. Nowadays, the increasing scarcity of vegetation cover and the degradation of local farmers’ land and surrounding reserves are causing many negative environmental effects, such as the drying up of water resources, loss of biodiversity and soil erosion. The plantation areas are made up of former degraded pastures, and are located close to areas that have been protected for several decades.

The project is led in the field by Anthony Mills, a geochemist and expert in environmental development projects. He is the founder of two companies, AfriCarbon in 2009 and C4 EcoSolutions in 2015, which ensure the technical and operational deployment of the project.

This project aims to improve the socio-economic life of the inhabitants of Saint-Michel de l'Attalaye by the establishment of 500.000 seedlings of both forest and fruit trees. The restoration benefits will impact directly to local communities as natural disaster risk reduction and protection from erosion and seawater intrusion. The project will also create multiple effects on improving local community incomes, creating new work-opportunities (mostly women group) directly involved in trees plantation, training of beneficiaries with knowledge transfer, encouraging organic production, protecting land agricultural production and providing profit sharing cash money for environmental mission on restoring the ecosystem.

Discovered in the 15th century by Christopher Columbus, the island of Hispaniola, comprising Haiti to the west and the Dominican Republic to the east, was originally 80% covered by a wide variety of trees. Today, Haiti is one of the most deforested countries in the world, with only 2% of the country's total surface area covered by woodland. In 2022 alone, deforestation in the country emitted 894,000 tons of CO2 equivalent. Today, facing extreme poverty, the rural population is forced to chop down trees to produce charcoal, the only fuel available in the absence of any national energy policy. Farming families are bearing the brunt of negative impacts resulting from forest ecosystem destruction: soil degradation and lower crop productivity, prolonged drought, water pollution and more.

Agrinotech stands for "new agricultural technologies". Agrinotech is a Haitian association specializing in the deployment of agricultural techniques conducive to the sustainable management of natural resources and the socio-economic development of local populations. Founded by a group of Haitian and American agronomists, Agrinotech focuses in particular on soil conservation and environmental preservation, as well as on training local producers in the latest sustainable farming methods.

Reforest'Action is partnering with Agrinotech to run an agroforestry project that is both socially meaningful and impact-generating. In nine sections of the Saint-Michel de l'Attalaye region, our partner is dedicated to raise awareness among local populations and to provide training in sustainable agriculture, the only viable means of subsistence in the face of climate change. Forest, fruit, and medicinal species have been integrated into the crops of farmers from the municipality of Saint-Michel-de-l'Attalaye. The primary goals of this program are to regenerate the area's vegetation cover and to ensure the food and economic security of local communities. However, long-term objectives include preserving water sources and groundwater, which are already under threat, and increasing stream flows in the Saint-Michel area, while providing people with sustainably sourced timber in order to reduce pressure on surrounding forests.

At an altitude of over 2,000 meters, the misty landscape of the Piura highlands is deceptive. This is indeed an arid ecosystem, made up of sparse dry forests threatened by desertification. The harsh climate is compounded by deforestation, a consequence of growing agricultural needs. According to the Servicio Nacional Forestal y de Fauna Silvestre, over 600,000 hectares of forest have been illegally cleared in the Piura region over the past twenty years. The province of Huancabamba, where the project financed by Reforest'Action is located, suffers the highest rate of deforestation. The near absence of vegetation exposes arable soils to water and wind erosion. Fires, which feed on the scanty brushwood, also represent a growing threat, while long periods without rainfall are dangerously drying up water resources.

Reforest’Action is associated with the Peruvian NGO Progreso, founded in 1993\. The NGO has more than 25 years of experience in the development of agroforestry systems, the improvement of food security for the populations of the Piura region and the fight against climate change. The Progreso team works hand in hand with local district governments and farming communities. Progreso will ensure the monitoring of the planted trees and raise awareness among villagers about sustainable agriculture and the importance of preserving forests.

Starting in 2019, this is the second natural ecosystem regeneration project financed by Reforest'Action in Peru. On the highlands of the Piura region and in partnership with Peruvian NGO PROGRESO, the actions carried out aim to regenerate the eroded soil and to fight against desertification. In this context, planting trees is an effective way of improving the soil, with many positive cascading effects: better water infiltration, control of water erosion, barrier against mudslides, recovery and maintenance of water resources, and improved soil fertility. At the surface, tree crowns act as windbreaks against wind erosion. Besides, the presence of vegetation in the landscape also generates a more humid microclimate, conducive to agriculture and livestock farming.

Since 2017, Reforest’Action is partnering with Yagasu, an Indonesian NGO, to work concretely on the restoration of this unique biodiversity hotspot, essential to the protection of the island’s coastlines. The objectives of the action correspond to the identified problems or real needs of the coastal community. Restoring mangroves as a nature-based solution strategy could make communities more resilient to environmental changes and improve their social-economic capacity. By working with local communities, this project aimed to restore severely degraded sites, control abrasion and reduce the tsunami's impact to improve the community’s agility in climate change mitigation. This project also increased the commitment of the local communities to protecting mangroves through group formation, policy initiative development, and environmental awareness education.
