PLACE-BASED CLIMATE ACTION

In temperate climates, the main threat to forests is degradation driven by climate change (droughts, wildfires, storms, diseases and pest outbreaks). Our projects aim to restore degraded forests through planting and assisted natural regeneration, rebuilding diverse, resilient and multifunctional forest ecosystems. In tropical climates, deforestation remains a major challenge, with direct impacts on climate, biodiversity and local communities. Our reforestation projects contribute to restoring forest ecosystems while complementing efforts to combat deforestation. They actively involve local communities, support the transition to more sustainable agricultural practices, and generate measurable environmental and socio-economic benefits at the landscape level.

The carbon storage simulator aims to provide an estimation of the greenhouse gases (GHG) sequestration potential of all our projects, according to their design and location. The method and calculation tool have been validated by Bureau Veritas according to the ISO 14064-3 standard, which applies to the quantification of greenhouse gas emissions or storage. The ex ante projection differs from an actual ex post measurement of carbon removed and is likely to change over time, depending on the project's performance.

The Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM) comes with restrictions in terms of price per tCO2e and volume of carbon credits available in a given region of the world. Not all organizations have the capacity or desire to go through this more structured process, and our « Local Climate Action » solution offers them a more flexible way to contribute to climate projects in regions that matter to them.

All our projects are designed to generate core benefits beyond climate. We have tools and methods for impact projection and measurement that can be applied to biodiversity and social indicators. These features are integrated into our MRV platform and can be selected as options according to your objectives.

Around the world, forest projects funded by Reforest'Action aim to preserve, restore, or recreate regenerative ecosystems to enhance their long-term ecosystem services. Our project selection is based on detailed specifications tailored to the location and type of ecosystem, and must adhere to the key principles of the Common Functional Framework developed by Reforest’Action.

In tropical regions, projects are led by NGOs and benefit local communities. In temperate zones, especially in France, trees are planted in both public and private forests. Ownership is therefore diverse: private individuals, the state, local authorities, etc. Note: in France, forests are highly fragmented as 75% are privately owned by over 3 million forest owners, with an average holding size of less than 4 hectares.

Reforest’Action is committed to supporting multi-species planting and natural regeneration projects that are adapted to local ecosystems. The species selected therefore vary and are chosen based on local soil and climate conditions, as well as the needs of local communities. Please note that our project guidelines prioritize native and broadleaf species whenever they are suited to the ecosystem, and exclude the conversion of predominantly broadleaf forests into predominantly coniferous forests, particularly in Europe.

Since its creation in 2010, the 1,860 projects implemented worldwide have enabled Reforest’Action to develop strong and continuously evolving expertise, driven by field experience, advances in scientific research and technological innovation.
