Situées sur la commune de Plédéliac, les parcelles sont des chênes-hêtraies avec un fort potentiel de régénération naturelle. Dans le but d'irrégulariser les peuplements et la gestion de la forêt, le propriétaire a identifié 38 trouées présentant de la régénération naturelle au stade semis, fourrée et gaule. L'objectif est de dégager et travailler ces trouées et parfois de les agrandir afin de garantir un bel avenir à cette régénération. Les travaux permettront donc de dégager de la végétation concurrente les semis pour leur permettre de grandir. Au stade de gaule, les travaux de dépressage serviront à diminuer la densité de tiges pour que les arbres restant puisse grandir en hauteur mais également en diamètre (des tiges trop serrées ne grandissent pas et risquent de casser lors de violents coups de vent).

Located in the Côtes-d'Armor region, the Saint-Aubin forest is experiencing difficulties in maintaining and growing its forest stands. With the aim of managing the forest in a way that is consistent with environmental concerns, the owner wishes to move towards irregular management of his forest.

Located in the town of Plédéliac, the plots are oak-beech stands with a high potential for natural regeneration. With a view to regularizing the stands and forest management, the landowner has identified 38 gaps with natural regeneration at the seedling, thicket and gaule stages. The goal is to clear and work these gaps, and in some cases to enlarge them, in order to guarantee a bright future for this regeneration. The work will clear the seedlings of competing vegetation to enable them to grow. At the gaule stage, the aim is to reduce the density of stems so that the remaining trees can grow both in height and diameter (stems that are too tightly packed won't grow and risk breaking in strong gales).

In this context, Reforest’Action is partnering with the Balipara Foundation, an Indian NGO, with the dual objective of restoring the forests of the State of Assam, in the Eastern Himalayas, and developing agroforestry in order to provide local communities with more sustainable agricultural solutions for their cotton and tea crops. 

By planting over 1 million trees, this project will help fight global warming thanks to the carbon stored in their wood, enrich the soil, recharge the aquifers and protect the crops from too much sun, preserve and develop local biodiversity as well as allow local communities to harvest the fruits to increase their food security. Surplus crops can be sold in local markets to provide additional income. Local people are also trained in the benefits of agroforestry and the long-term maintenance of the planted trees. Through forest restoration linked incomes, communities are better able to access universal basic assets such as healthcare and education.

The Indian state of Assam, located in the eastern tip of India, has lost more than 9.5% of its vegetation cover since 2000, due to the increasing conversion of natural primary forests into agricultural plots, and the invasion of exotic species that thrive at the expense of native vegetation. The result is a decline in the health of natural ecosystems, with soil degradation, increasing land desertification, and the depletion of water tables. Faced with a degraded environment, local populations are confronted with decreasing agricultural yields, which goes hand in hand with the collapse of their food security. In the state of Assam, only 8% of young people between the ages of 6 and 23 benefit from a healthy and balanced diet.

Founded in 2007, Balipara Foundation is an Indian NGO first dedicated to the conservation of Asian elephants across India. After several years in the field, their expertise enabled them to establish the link between saving elephants and preserving their natural environment: the forests. This led to the creation of the Rural Futures model, which aims to restore forests while generating income for local communities. Since the creation of Balipara, over 2,000 hectares of forest have been restored. Alongside these reforestation programs, Balipara has been developing agroforestry projects with local communities for the past 5 years, combining trees and cash crops to generate additional income.

Reforest'Action has joined forces with the NGO Balipara Foundation to restore the forests within the state of Assam, on the eastern edge of India, between Bhutan, China and Bangladesh. The aim of this project is twofold: to restore the degraded forests of this eastern Himalayan region, and to develop agroforestry within tea and cotton crops in order to provide local communities with more sustainable agricultural solutions. The "Living Lab India" Project is being developed under the Circular Bioeconomy Alliance established by His Majesty King Charles III as part of his Sustainable Markets Initiative. The CBA aims to catalyze investment to create resilient landscapes and sustainable markets powered by nature.

Reforest’Action is joining forces with C4 EcoSolutions and AfriCarbon, two South African companies into the protected reserves of Kuzuko and Koedoeskloof. The goal is to restore these ecosystems by planting more than 500,000 seeds of Spekboom, a local species which is essential to the ecological functioning of the region. The project will develop a new sustainable grazing management system to improve the carrying capacity of livestock without degrading the environment. Numerous benefits will also be generated: the return of biodiversity, including a population of elephants, rainwater infiltration improvement, restoration of arable land and improve the living conditions of the local populations.

Within the Eastern Cape, in South Africa, land desertification is due to the increasing pressure of livestock on pastureland. Nowadays, the increasing scarcity of vegetation cover and the degradation of local farmers’ land and surrounding reserves are causing many negative environmental effects, such as the drying up of water resources, loss of biodiversity and soil erosion. The plantation areas are made up of former degraded pastures, and are located close to areas that have been protected for several decades.

The project is led in the field by Anthony Mills, a geochemist and expert in environmental development projects. He is the founder of two companies, AfriCarbon in 2009 and C4 EcoSolutions in 2015, which ensure the technical and operational deployment of the project.

At an altitude of over 2,000 meters, the misty landscape of the Piura highlands is deceptive. This is indeed an arid ecosystem, made up of sparse dry forests threatened by desertification. The harsh climate is compounded by deforestation, a consequence of growing agricultural needs. According to the Servicio Nacional Forestal y de Fauna Silvestre, over 600,000 hectares of forest have been illegally cleared in the Piura region over the past twenty years. The province of Huancabamba, where the project financed by Reforest'Action is located, suffers the highest rate of deforestation. The near absence of vegetation exposes arable soils to water and wind erosion. Fires, which feed on the scanty brushwood, also represent a growing threat, while long periods without rainfall are dangerously drying up water resources.

Reforest’Action is associated with the Peruvian NGO Progreso, founded in 1993\. The NGO has more than 25 years of experience in the development of agroforestry systems, the improvement of food security for the populations of the Piura region and the fight against climate change. The Progreso team works hand in hand with local district governments and farming communities. Progreso will ensure the monitoring of the planted trees and raise awareness among villagers about sustainable agriculture and the importance of preserving forests.

Starting in 2019, this is the second natural ecosystem regeneration project financed by Reforest'Action in Peru. On the highlands of the Piura region and in partnership with Peruvian NGO PROGRESO, the actions carried out aim to regenerate the eroded soil and to fight against desertification. In this context, planting trees is an effective way of improving the soil, with many positive cascading effects: better water infiltration, control of water erosion, barrier against mudslides, recovery and maintenance of water resources, and improved soil fertility. At the surface, tree crowns act as windbreaks against wind erosion. Besides, the presence of vegetation in the landscape also generates a more humid microclimate, conducive to agriculture and livestock farming.
