Cette parcelle de 3,23ha situé dans un ensemble feuillu de 80ha était majoritairement composé de frênes atteints par la chalarose. Le projet a pour objectif de reboiser cette parcelle avec un mélange de sept essences avec comme essences principales le châtaignier et l’érable plane. Ainsi créée, la forêt sera adaptée aux conditions particulières du milieu, et fournira des habitats et ressources nombreuses et diverses pour la faune locale. Elle sera également plus résistante aux attaques et maladies, ainsi qu'aux aléas climatiques. A termes les arbres plantés assureront également une continuité forestière sur la zone et participeront pleinement à la formation d’un patrimoine forestier résilient.

First appearing in Eastern Europe in the early 1990s, possibly originating in the East, this fungal disease has spread rapidly across Europe since the beginning of the 21st century, affecting ash trees. The fungus is responsible for leaf wilting, stem necrosis and branch desiccation, leading to the death of affected trees. This is a real tragedy for this emblematic species of our forests, which is in danger of disappearing.

This 3.23-hectare plot, located in an 80-hectare stand of broadleaved trees, consisted mainly of ash trees affected by chalarosis (a pathogenic fungus). The aim of the project is to reforest this parcel with a mixture of seven species, the main species being chestnut and flat maple. The forest created in this way will be adapted to the specific conditions of the environment, and will provide numerous and varied habitats and resources for the local fauna. It will also be more resistant to attack and disease, as well as to the vagaries of the weather. In the long term, the trees planted will also ensure forest continuity in the area and contribute fully to the creation of a resilient forest heritage.

Le projet de restauration vise à remplacer les épicéas détruits par une variété d'essences plus adaptées aux conditions locales. Ensembles, ils parviendront mieux à résister aux ravageurs, aux maladies et aux aléas climatique de plus en plus fréquents. Cette diversification permettra en fait de renforcer la résilience de cette forêt face à toutes les menaces tout en conservant équilibre écologique. En Belgique, la forêt joue un rôle crucial pour la biodiversité et l'économie du pays. Cependant, ces dernières années, elle a été confrontée à une menace sans précédent due à l'attaque du scolyte, cette insecte ravageur de l'épicéa, qui est l'une des espèces majoritaire de la forêt belge.

The bark beetle attack has caused considerable devastation in spruce plantations in Belgium. Hundreds of thousands of trees died and many forests were ravaged. This unprecedented situation highlighted the vulnerability of monoculture and the need to adopt a more diversified approach to forest management.

The restoration project at Bovigny aims to replace spruce trees killed by bark beetles (xylophagous insect pests) with a variety of species better adapted to local conditions. Together, the trees will be better able to resist pests, disease and the increasingly frequent vagaries of the weather. This diversification will in fact strengthen the forest's resilience in the face of all threats, while preserving its ecological balance. Belgium's forests play a crucial role in the country's biodiversity and economy. In recent years, however, it has faced an unprecedented threat from the bark beetle attack on spruce, one of the majority species in the Belgian forest.

La forêt d’Amblève est principalement composée de résineux et notamment d’épicéas. Actuellement, le cantonnement dans lequel est située cette forêt est constitué à 75% de pessières. L’objectif est de réduire cette proportion progressivement vers 50%. Pour éviter les coupes rases, le cantonnement travaille par éclaircies et réduction progressive du couvert pour irrégulariser les peuplements et initier un processus de régénération artificielle. Les épicéas sont des arbres qui ont besoin de beaucoup de lumière pour avoir une bonne croissance au stade adulte, laissant ainsi très peu de lumière atteignant le sol. La régénération naturelle est donc peu présente, nécessitant ainsi un apport externe de jeunes plants. Les éclaircies localisées sont réalisées pour prévenir au maximum des attaques d’épicéas sur des arbres fragilisés par la compétition pour la lumière.

PARTNERSHIP_FOR_THE_GOALS

During the Second World War, and particularly during the Ardennes Offensive in the winter of 44/45, the forests of the Eifel were damaged or even destroyed by the war. Damage was particularly severe along supply routes and near strategic centres, including the Wahlerscheid road through the forest. Most of the stands that had been shot up or destroyed were cut down and replanted with spruce shortly after the war.

Since the ‘Wiebke’ tornado in winter 89/90 and the destruction of several hectares of spruce stands, the direction of softwood management has changed. These disasters showed us the fragility of large monocultures. The aim is to remedy this by creating stable, structured stands of mixed species.

The Amblève forest is mainly made up of coniferous trees, in particular spruces. At present, 75% of the area in which the forest is located is spruce forest. The aim is to gradually reduce this proportion to 50%. To avoid clear-cutting, the district is working by thinning and gradually reducing the canopy cover to even out the stands and initiate a process of artificial regeneration. Spruce trees need a lot of light to grow well as adults, leaving very little light reaching the ground. As a result, there is little natural regeneration, requiring an external supply of young seedlings. To restore this forest, 3 hardwood species and 1 softwood species will be planted to diversify the stand and make it more resilient, while promoting biodiversity and the production of high-quality, sustainable timber. In addition, the young trees planted will help combat global warming by storing carbon.

Cette région de Belgique est très urbanisée et comporte peu de forêts. Les principaux boisements qui s’y trouvent sont des exploitations fruitières intensives, qui ont par conséquent peu d’atouts environnementaux et ne sont pas adaptés aux défis que représente le changement climatique. La régénération naturelle, où le hêtre prend le dessus sur le chêne, doit donc être accompagnée afin de conserver un massif diversifié. La croissance d’essences minoritaires est soutenue grâce à différents travaux sylvicoles. C’est ce qu’on appelle la régénération naturelle assistée, qui sera, dans ce projet, associée à la plantation de quelques chênes. La diversification qui en découlera favorisera l’accueil d’une biodiversité riche et variée. Par ailleurs, les arbres stockeront du carbone, participant ainsi à la lutte contre le dérèglement climatique.

This project is located in the Flemish region of Belgium. The area is highly urbanized, with large-scale farms. The few wooded plots are mainly poplar plantations. The forest was originally composed of oak trees. Beech trees were introduced a few years ago, and the growth of oak seedlings is almost non-existent. The beech is starting to take over. As we don't want this stand to turn into a beech forest, we need to help the oaks to develop properly to ensure the renewal and survival of this oak forest (a very rare typology in the region). As this parcel is surrounded by woodland or pasture, it is an essential link in the ecological corridor that is the property as a whole.

This region of Belgium is highly urbanized and has few forests. The main woodlands here are intensive fruit farms, which have few environmental assets and are not adapted to the challenges presented by climate change. Natural regeneration, in which beech is currently taking over from oak, must therefore be supported in order to maintain a diversified forest. The growth of minority species is supported by various silvicultural operations. This is known as assisted natural regeneration, and in this project it will be combined with the planting of a few oak trees. The resulting diversification will encourage a rich and varied biodiversity. The trees will also store carbon, helping to combat climate change.
