This multi-year project covers 16 municipalities and aims to restore/create ecological corridors to the north of the Grande Montagne de Reims as far as the Vesle valley, taking into account the linear infrastructure crossing the area: the high-speed line, the A4 motorway, the departmental road (formerly a national highway) linking Reims to Châlons-en-Champagne, as well as secondary departmental roads.

With the ‘Les Chemins du Vivant’ project devised by two winegrowers from Ludes and Verzy, the Greater Reims Urban Community is helping to roll out the first actions to restore ecological continuity, with a view to creating an overall biodiversity strategy. To this end, a consultancy firm is working in parallel on a proposal for a green network, as well as a development plan to promote biodiversity in the area, of which the hedgerows will be a part.

Located in a high-risk fire area in the Castelo Branco district, this forest is of crucial importance in terms of risk management and the preservation of a forest ecosystem in a particularly arid environment. It also contributes to raising local awareness of environmental issues and the need to protect these vital natural areas. The project will enable this forest to be managed sustainably, focusing on fire prevention, biodiversity preservation and the promotion of responsible silvicultural practices.

The project is located in the municipality of Penha Garcia, Portugal. The stand is mainly composed of mature cork oaks, which are currently being harvested. Nestled in a dry, fire-prone environment, sustainable management of this forest is crucial to minimizing the risk of fire. It is imperative to adopt responsible forestry practices aimed at reducing these risks, preserving tree vitality and regeneration, while integrating economic aspects and preserving local biodiversity.

A once majestic forest, now forgotten and abandoned for many years. Its native trees are slowly withering away, lacking proper care such as pruning, water retention and the elimination of competing species. This neglect has not only led to the disappearance of the ancient giants of the forest, but has also put a stop to any possibility of natural regeneration.

This RNA project in Santa Clara a Velha is committed to sustainable forest development and environmental preservation in this parish in southern Portugal. By focusing on soil conservation, water retention, the creation of a perennial and resilient forest, and carbon capture, this project is of key importance to local biodiversity and the fight against climate change. In addition, by supporting the local economy, it contributes to strengthening community ties and ensuring a more sustainable future for generations to come.

The project is located in a region whose soils and landscapes have been heavily impacted by intensive eucalyptus plantations and exploitation. Low-density planting of cork oak is therefore one of the only solutions for restoring these areas. This will enable the oak to grow well, without competition for water and nutrients in the first few years, which is very important in water-limited ecosystems such as those of the Mediterranean, and later, with the soil restored, natural regeneration will take place and other tree and shrub species will colonize the environment.

The aim is to re-establish the traditional Portuguese cork oak forest. However, the vulnerability of this practice has increased in the Mediterranean in recent decades, raising concerns about its decline. Major threats include land-use change and the abandonment of traditional practices, notably "montados" where mature trees coexist with grasslands, cereal crops and understorey shrubs. The growing use of plastic caps is also contributing to this decline. Fires and drought favour the transformation of cork forests into shrublands, complicating forest regeneration as acorns are consumed by various animals. This underlines the importance of restoration projects, such as the planting of cork oaks, to rehabilitate degraded areas.

This abandoned forest has shown signs of neglect for many years, with native trees dying due to lack of management (pruning, water retention, removal of competing species) of both existing vegetation and natural regeneration. Other areas had only spontaneous vegetation and weeds, and are being cleared to prepare the ground for planting.

The main aim of this project is to recreate a sustainable forest in the long term, by replanting new areas devoid of forest and densifying existing wooded areas. This will encourage natural regeneration and the preservation of local species. A test area for new species will also be added to observe impacts and learn about new varieties adapted to the region.
This project aims to restore ecosystems and encourage the development of biodiversity, bearing in mind the principles of sustainable forest development and climate action. It aims to support soil conservation, water retention and act as a promoter of biodiversity and carbon sequestration.
