### **Her commitment to the environment...**

I have always loved the countryside. Growing up, I realized that I live in a country with a wide variety of ecosystems, climates, and plant and animal species that are affected by climate change, pollution, and poor resource management. All of these negative effects are affecting the way of life of the Peruvian people and also my own, which is why I know that I have to commit myself to the environment.

### **Her background before Reforest'Action...**

I have a master's degree in Biodiversity, Landscape and Sustainable Management, and a bachelor's degree in Biology.

I worked as a project manager, implementing projects in different regions of Peru, in different ecosystems: subtropical forests, Andean highlands, inter-Andean valleys and areas surrounded by mining and protected areas. I was responsible for the design, execution and supervision . Before Reforest'Action, I also worked in Nepal and Tanzania.

### **Her missions and responsibilities for Reforest'Action...**

As Project Officer for Reforest'Action, my role consists of researching, developing and monitoring forestry and carbon projects in need of funding. I also conduct annual field audits and impact assessments of projects funded by Reforest'Action. I act as the link between Reforest'Action and the project leaders and ensure the proper conduct of activities in the field on a daily basis.

### **Her vision of the Peruvian forests...**

In Peru deforestation is a very big problem. In the Amazon forests, activities such as agriculture, cattle, illegal mining, and illegal logging are the main reasons for deforestation. On the other hand, in the Andean highlands, many of the forests were eliminated a long time ago due to agriculture and cattle raising. Now, the soils of these areas are very degraded, and their recovery is very slow and, in some cases, irreversible. The government and other private organizations carry out activities to recover these forests, but it is not enough.

### **The forestry projects for which she is responsible...**

Currently, I am working on tree projects located in the regions of Cusco and Tarapoto in Peru. The objective of all these projects is to restore degraded areas that were once covered by forests. To do this, the projects involve local communities in building nurseries and producing trees that will then be planted in the degraded areas. The projects also help train people in conservation and sustainable forest management. In addition, they encourage economic activities that generate income for families and prevent deforestation.

I am also in the process of evaluating two possible carbon credit projects, which are still in the early stages, but I am hopeful that they will soon be in place.

I have worked in different regions of Peru, which allowed me to know the way of life and thought of these communities, their dynamics and their relations with public and private actors.

My main objective is to set up a carbon project in Peru. In addition, I will contribute to several audits and due diligence missions within the geographical area I am in charge of, and carry out the selection of new projects funded by Reforest'Action.

Reforest'Action around the world: Interview with Juliet Mormontoy, our Project Officer in Peru

**Initiated in 2015, the project developed in the Peruvian region of San Martín, and led in the field by the Urku Centre, is the first project financed by Reforest'Action at the very heart of the Amazon forest. If the early years were focused on the development of agroforestry, this last season is defined by the natural regeneration of a great number of native species, in a continued effort to conserve the Amazon. After 8 years of operation, the impacts of the project on the local communities are significant. Here is an overview of the economic alternatives born from the regenerated forest.**

**A landmark project for Reforest'Action**
------------------------------------------

Historically located around the city of Tarapoto, in the Cordillera Escalera Conservation Area, the project has expanded over the years to encompass three northeastern regions in Peru: San Martín, Loreto and Ucayali.

Anchored in the upper Amazon, the project area was originally covered by tropical forests and wetlands. Since the late 20th century, the expansion of agricultural programmes for the cultivation of coffee, cocoa, bananas, maize and manioc, the construction of road infrastructure and illegal logging have led to the **massive deforestation** of primary forests. The families of the Shawi, Awajun and Quechua ethnic groups are increasingly suffering from the disappearance of natural ecosystems: changes in the rainy season, prolonged droughts and lack of water are becoming commonplace.

Through the establishment of **agroforestry systems,** the initial objective was to restore the land of small-scale indigenous producers through the establishment of native species in agroforestry. During the first years of the project, a variety of fruit species (lemon, mango, cocoa), fast-growing species (acacia) and high trees (mahogany) were planted. Years later, on some agroforestry plots, trees have become big enough to constitute a young forest, hosting biodiversity and allowing the soil to be restored.

**Project evolution: time for regeneration**
--------------------------------------------

Currently implemented within two Shawi communities, also called Chayahuita, the 2022-2023 season reflects the evolution of the project and of the work carried out with the local people.

Today, it is no longer about planting trees, but promoting the **natural regeneration** of the forest. Since 2022, the [Urku Centre,](https://www.centrourku.org/) which is the project leader on the ground, has been working hand in hand with the Shiwa people to fight deforestation and restore degraded ecosystems, without planting. With funding from Reforest'Action, our partner is developing and promoting a range of economic incentives to discourage farming families from further damaging their land through conventional practices or from cutting down the surrounding forest. By allowing nature to take over, many of the region's native trees and plants will be able to regenerate on their own.

With the aim of promoting natural regeneration among the communities, farmers receive **financial support** in order to protect their plots. Fighting pests, controlling cattle access, preventing fires (which have become more and more frequent) and limiting their spread: a number of preventive measures must be taken to help the ecosystems to recover naturally.

In addition, the Urku Centre runs several **tree nurseries** where seedlings of black verbena, guava, Brazilian acai, Peruvian balsam, mahogany and other native species are currently being produced. These native species, with their nutritious fruits or precious wood, are then distributed to the families participating in the project and planted according to their needs.

Since July 2022, **65 hectares** of deforested areas have been rehabilitated and **273,000 native plants** have been valued through natural regeneration, for a total of 657,000 trees planted or regenerated since 2015. This season, **nineteen** Shawi families are involved and benefiting from the project's activities.

### **The benefits of this new method**

Contributing to the conservation of the Amazon through natural regeneration has many benefits. In addition to restoring local flora and fauna **in a gentle way,** this supportive method raises awareness among beneficiaries regarding the need to maintain the forest cover. The aim is to convince farmers that it is possible to generate a decent income without necessarily cutting down the trees, and that regenerating their natural environment can contribute to a better quality of life.

**Biodiversity conservation** is one of the main purposes of the Urku Centre. The wide variety of endemic species protected as part of the project contributes to the conservation of plant biodiversity in the Amazon and to the preservation of endangered animal species. Besides, the centre's activities include the rescue, rehabilitation and reintegration of wild animals captured for illegal trade. Since 2006, more than a thousand animals belonging to 61 different species have been rescued thanks to their actions.

After 8 years of working with Reforest'Action, the multitude of species planted has enabled the Urku Research Centre to gather **botanical and scientific knowledge** on each of them. The trees maintenance and natural regeneration are thus strengthened, allowing their economic value to be recognised and fully exploited at the local level. Using the food, medicinal and melliferous species available on the plots, our partner is working alongside the local communities to revive the **ancestral know-how** of the Peruvian Amazon.

**Socio-economic impacts of the project**
-----------------------------------------

Natural regeneration and **economic alternatives** are closely linked. Indeed, it is necessary to convince producers that the trees they are protecting have economic value. To this end, the Urku Centre encourages the population to develop a number of income-generating activities over the long term.

The beneficiaries have thus managed to **diversify the local economy** by capitalising on the **ecosystem services** provided by the now-grown trees. A variety of lucrative initiatives have emerged, such as beekeeping, the sale of lemons from agroforestry, the manufacture of cosmetics based on essential oils, the production of chocolate and cocoa distillate, medicinal tourism and shamanism based on sacred plants.

In light of the results obtained, the families involved seem **satisfied and highly motivated.** During the project audit, they testified that they had succeeded in developing an alternative to deforestation while increasing their livelihood, but also in improving their diet thanks to the fruits produced by the trees planted in agroforestry in previous years. Out of **25 beneficiaries** surveyed, all have created an economic activity linked to the project and 24 confirm that the project has brought direct economic benefits to them and their families.

### **Beekeeping as an economic pillar**

From 2021 onwards, the Urku Centre has implemented a value chain based on a key activity: **beekeeping.** Bee farming is based on the natural regeneration of deforested land, by enabling the growth of numerous plant species, attracting pollinators. Today, **90%** of the families participating in the project have developed a beekeeping activity, and a cooperative made up of **20 newly trained beekeepers** has been created. Named "Mushuk runa", this organisation receives technical support from our partner and has even been granted a subsidy by the Peruvian government to purchase new equipment.

Some of the beneficiaries went a step further by using the income from beekeeping to build public facilities on their plots. Based on the **eco-tourism model,** they provide various attractions, all relying on the natural regeneration of the Amazonian rainforest: educational workshops, craft sales, spiritual ceremonies, and more.

Peru: socio-economic impacts of a project started 8 years ago

In Peru, **more than one million hectares of forest have disappeared in 15 years**. In this country, that contains **13% of the Amazonian Forest,** trees are essential **to the health of unique tropical ecosystems**, to the **survival of a rare and often threatened biodiversity** but also to the **subsistence of millions of Peruvians, farmers and inhabitants of rural areas.** To reduce the impact of deforestation, Reforest'Action is supporting **three projects dedicated to the restoration and protection of forest ecosystems on the field**.

**Tarapoto: Reforest’Action's first tropical project**
------------------------------------------------------

First stop: **Tarapoto**. Being **our first project implemented in a tropical zone**, this **agroforestry** project, located **in the heart of the Peruvian Amazonian Fores**t, holds a very special place to us. **Started in 2015**, it has been monitored and accompanied on site by the **Urku Center**.

Tarapoto is an **urban area of 320,000 inhabitants** situated in the San Martin region. Located at **an altitude of 356 meters**, it is surrounded by low and high forests.

Since trees were planted, **time has passed,** and the reforested plots now **look more like forests than plantations**. _“Fruit, fast-growing and high-growing species have been planted over the years_", explains Annette Butty, in charge of Reforest’Action’s forestry projects in South America. Today, these forests are extremely mixed. Even medicinal plants with multiple virtues grow there, which allow the plots’ owners to generate additional income”.

Two of the project's beneficiaries have decided to go **one step further by creating agro-ecotourism farms around the project**. "_These are green tourism centers in which visitors can discover the variety of species that grow there, the beehives, but also the variety of products from the forest, their transformation and marketing processes_," explains Annette.

Heriberto is one of them and explains the **benefits generated by the project**: "_On the plots, everything is produced in a completely natural and organic way. Most of the species we grow here are ancestral and endemic to the region. Unfortunately, many of them are at risk of extinction. Through the project, we want to make their existence known to as many people as possible thanks to the educational activities organised and the marketing of the products made out of them_”.

We leave Tarapoto, **happy we could witness a concrete example of a socio-economic model built on nature-based soutions**... A model that allows **its beneficiaries to live self-sufficiently**, without depending on the **variable and often low prices of coffee and cocoa that are mainly produced in Peru**.

**Lamas: some encouraging outcomes for a still recent project**
---------------------------------------------------------------

Lamas, a **province of more than 80,000 inhabitants**, located 23 kilometres north of Tarapoto, is **our second stop**.

On the outskirts of this municipality, **in the middle of the Amazonian Forest**, this **vast agroforestry and reforestation project on degraded ecosystems** has been underway since 2021, **in partnership with the Centre for Innovation and Management for Sustainable Development (CIGDES)**.

On the plots concerned, **productive and leguminous species are introduced** to encourage the establishment of **agroecosystems**, **restore degraded agricultural plots or pastures**, but also **help 240 beneficiaries adopt sustainable forestry practices in line with current environmental challenges**.

On the ground, the main nursery was set up in September 2021. During our visit, we take part in the restoration of a demonstration plot by local community members. “_We are only at the very beginning of the project, but we can already see its positive impacts on the population_, observes Annette. _Setting up the nurseries, monitoring and plantings are sources of income for the members of the technical team who carry them out_”.

As for the beneficiaries, the project seems to **nourish their hope of seeing their living conditions improve**: soon, the **latex** produced by the **rubber tree**, the **white cocoa** produced by the **majambo** and the **fruits** derived from the **Mayan walnut tree** will be harvested and marketed, a way **to increase their income on a regular basis**.

**Piura: a project driven by a collective spirit**
--------------------------------------------------

The tour of Peruvian projects ends in a **cold, foggy weather, 2500 meters above sea level**. On that day, we reach the project’s plots, **located around the city of Piura**, capital of the Piura region, north of the country.

**Started in 2019,** in partnership with the **Peruvian NGO Progreso**, the Piura project aims at **restoring degraded soils, introducing agroecosystems and limit desertification in the mountain in order to promote biodiversity.**

In addition to the restoration of private parcels, the project includes **community plots,** where local community members gather to carry out planting actions. This collective movement reminds us of **the importance of the social aspect of reforestation on communal land**:

"_This approach could not be implemented if we did not take an interest in the community as a whole,_" observes Annette. _Here, in 2 years, we have already planted 1 million trees thanks to the community’s collective effort. It is because the projects create links between people of all ages, for the long-term benefit of the greatest number, that it all works_”.

**A meeting between the projects' beneficiaries as a final point to our trip**
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At the very end of our trip, we participate to **an event organized by Reforest’Action** that spans over the sharing of experience **between our partners and the projects’ beneficiaries**.

On that day, an earthquake that damaged the road network in the north of the country prevented some of the participants to get there. Despite this, **discussions are going well**, raising the necessity to **follow-up and monitor each of the projects** initiated in Peru, as explained by Annette: "_This kind of events gives beneficiaries a voice and allows us to learn from their know-how and experience. It reminds us of the importance of encouraging dialogue between different stakeholders. It allows us to take a long-term view, well beyond the planting phases. Today, time has come for knowledge sharing and inter-community training. We must continue to put all our energy into increasing people's forest knowledge, so that they can make the most of the projects implemented_”.

This conclusion is a reminder of the **importance of collective action** as well as the need to **make local communities agents of forest ecosystem restoration**.

Dans le département du Rhône, les haies bocagères présentes sur les parcelles concernées vont être restaurées et de nouvelles vont être plantées. Ces haies serviront essentielles à la préservation de la biodiversité environnante. En effet, la protection de la biodiversité, tant sur les sites protégés pour leur intérêt écologique que sur les parcelles agricoles, est un enjeu de taille au sein de ce département. Le projet prévoit donc de planter diverses essences de feuillus. Cette démarche permettra de restaurer les corridors écologiques, milieux qui relient les différents habitats naturels des espèces locales, une démarche qui participera ainsi à la préservation de la biodiversité. De plus, ces haies situées en zone péri-urbaine auront un avantage pédagogique car elles sensibiliseront les riverains à l’intérêt écologique des haies. Ce projet compte 3000 arbres plantés qui permettront à terme de stocker du carbone, participant ainsi à la lutte contre le dérèglement climatique.

In the Rhône department, the hedgerows on the plots concerned will be restored and new ones planted. These hedgerows will serve primarily to preserve the surrounding biodiversity. Indeed, the protection of biodiversity, both on sites protected for their ecological interest and on agricultural plots, is a major issue in this department. The project therefore involves planting a variety of deciduous species. This will help restore ecological corridors, which link the various natural habitats of local species, and thus contribute to the preservation of biodiversity. In addition, these hedges, located in a peri-urban area, will have an educational benefit, as they will raise awareness among local residents of the ecological value of hedges. The project includes the planting of 3,000 trees, which will ultimately store carbon and help combat climate change.

In rural areas of Morocco, the challenges of economic development go hand in hand with the implementation of collective, sustainable agricultural solutions. Permaculture and agroforestry are virtuous practices that provide a real boost to self-sufficiency, food security and the incomes of local communities. They create a nourishing forest and combat desertification.

In rural areas of Morocco, Reforest'Action is developing agroforestry projects in villages throughout the country, thanks to its local partner Ibn Al Baytar. The aim is to support economic development and the implementation of collective, sustainable agricultural solutions. In addition to developing agroforestry and organic production among farmers, the project also has an educational aim, with the emphasis on raising awareness of the benefits of trees among local populations.

Situé au cœur du Parc Naturel du Gatinais, ce vaste massif forestier est composé de feuillus, notamment de chênes en taillie ou taillie sous futaie. Malheureusement, les peuplements présents sur les 3 parcelles concernées sont relativement pauvres en raison d’une gestion inappropriée, de la présence d’une population excédentaire de gibier et d’une gestion forestière dépassée (basée sur des rotations de coupes à blanc par blocs). L’objectif aujourd’hui est de modifier le mode de gestion du massif et de rétablir l’équilibre et la diversité du peuplement. Le projet prévoit donc de conserver les semenciers présents, de conduire des dépressages et dégagements des semis et d’enrichir le peuplement d’essences diverses indigènes pour accélerer la régénération des peuplements. Cette démarche permettra d’enrichir les services écosystémiques du massif mais également d’augmenter sa capacité de production de bois.

Located in the heart of the Gatinais Nature Park, this vast forest is made up of deciduous trees, in particular coppiced oak. Unfortunately, the stands on the 3 parcels concerned are relatively poor due to inappropriate management, the presence of an excess game population and outdated forest management (based on block clear-cutting rotations). The aim today is to change the way the massif is managed and restore the balance and diversity of the stand. The project therefore involves conserving existing seed trees, carrying out depressurization and seedling removal, and enriching the stand with a variety of native species to accelerate regeneration. This approach will not only enrich the ecosystem services of the massif, but also increase its wood production capacity.

Dans la municipalité de Dahnen, située dans le land de Rhénanie-Palatinat en Allemagne, la parcelle forestière concernée doit faire l’objet d’un reboisement. En effet, l’ancien peuplement monospécifique composé d’épicéas, a été victime d’une invasion de scolytes. Ces insectes xylophages qui fait dépérir les arbres pouvant causer à terme le dépérissement des spécimens touchés. Pour remédier à cette situation et redynamiser le peuplement, la plantation d’essences feuillues indigènes, adaptées au climat de la station, doivent être plantées. In the municipality of Dahnen, in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate, the forest plot in question is to be reforested. The former monospecific spruce stand had fallen victim to an invasion of bark beetles. These xylophagous insects, which cause trees to wither, can eventually lead to the death of affected specimens. To remedy this situation and revitalize the stand, native deciduous species adapted to the site's climate need to be planted. This diversification of species will increase the massif's resilience in the face of possible climatic or biological hazards. In the long term, the reconstitution of this stand will enable biodiversity to return to the massif, and the trees to store carbon, thereby combating global warming. Finally, the trees planted will ensure forest continuity and contribute to the creation of a resilient forest heritage.

Ce projet est situé dans la région Wallonne en Belgique. Plus précisément dans la ville de Florenville. Sur cette ancienne monoculture, 90 % du peuplement a été détruit par le scolyte. Malheureusement, ce phénomène n’est pas rare au sein des cultures monospécifiques qui peinent à se défendre contre les attaques d’insectes. Pour restaurer et fortifier le peuplement, des essences diverses ont été plantées après récolte des arbres scolytés. Un mélange de résineux et de feuillus a été sélectionné pour redonner vie à un massif mélangé, résilient, capable de se défendre contre les aléas naturels. Cette démarche a ainsi permis de reconstituer le couvert forestier sur la zone et de fournir des habitats à la biodiversité locale. Sur la durée, les arbres participeront à la lutte contre le réchauffement climatique en stockant du carbone.

This project is located in the Walloon region of Belgium, more precisely in the town of Florenville. In this former monoculture, 90% of the stand was destroyed by the bark beetle. Unfortunately, this phenomenon is not uncommon in monospecific crops, which have difficulty defending themselves against insect attack. To restore and strengthen the stand, a variety of tree species were planted after the trees attacked by the pests had been harvested. A mix of coniferous and deciduous trees was selected to give new life to a mixed, resilient forest capable of defending itself against natural hazards. In this way, the forest cover was restored to the area, providing habitats for local biodiversity. In the long term, the trees will help combat global warming by storing carbon.

Les parcelles concernées sont situées sur une colline, sur la frontière nord du Parc National des North York Moors, tout près de la petite ville de Great Ayton. La colline, du Yorkshire et du Nord-Est de l’Angleterre, est un élément du paysage apprécié des riverains et des randonneurs. Par le passé, le déficit d’entretien de la parcelle visée par le projet a conduit à son dépérissement prématuré. En 2015, des travaux ont été entrepris pour renouveler le peuplement et favoriser la croissance d’une forêt indigène. Des feuillus seront ainsi introduits pour créer un terrain foisonnant, favorable à la biodiversité. Les avantages du projet seront multiples. Ainsi diversifié, le massif sera plus à même de résister aux aléas climatiques comme biologiques. Les arbres plantés contribueront à leur tour à stocker du carbone et ainsi à freiner le réchauffement climatique. La mise en œuvre de ce projet participera à la continuité et à la préservation du couvert forestier sur cette zone. 

The plots in question are located on a hill on the northern boundary of the North York Moors National Park, close to the small town of Great Ayton. The hill, part of Yorkshire and North-East England, is a popular landscape feature for local residents and walkers. In the past, the lack of maintenance of the plot in question has led to its premature decline. In 2015, work was undertaken to renew the stand and encourage the growth of a native forest. Deciduous trees will be introduced to create a lush, biodiversity-friendly landscape. The benefits of this project will be manifold. Diversified in this way, the forest will be better able to withstand climatic and biological hazards. The trees planted will in turn help to store carbon and thus slow down global warming. The implementation of this project will contribute to the continuity and preservation of the forest cover in this area.

Au nord du Luxembourg, cette parcelle forestière de 3,46 hectares a été victime d’une attaque de scolytes. À l’origine, le massif était monospécifique. C’est ce qui explique l’invasion d’insectes dont a été victime cette forêt Luxembourgeoise, ce type de peuplement résistant souvent mal aux attaques biologiques comme aux aléas climatiques. Les scolytes sont des insectes xylophages qui provoque le dépérissement des spécimens touchés. À Knaphoscheid, les scolytes ont causé de nombreux dégâts. Pour cette raison, le projet prévoit de reboiser le massif grâce à diverses essences de feuillus locaux et quelques résineux. Cette initiative favorisera la présence d’une biodiversité variée au sein de la parcelle. De plus, la démarche rendra la forêt plus résiliente pour faire face à d’éventuelles nouvelles attaques d’insectes. A terme, les arbres assureront une continuité forestière sur la zone et participeront à la formation d’un patrimoine forestier résilient.

In the north of Luxembourg, this 3.46-hectare forest plot fell victim to bark beetle attack. Originally, the forest was monospecific. This explains why the Luxembourg forest was invaded by bark beetles, as this type of stand is often poorly resistant to biological attacks and climatic hazards. Bark beetles are xylophagous insects which cause affected specimens to die back. In Knaphoscheid, bark beetles have caused extensive damage. For this reason, the project plans to reforest the massif with a variety of local deciduous species and a few conifers. This initiative will promote the presence of a varied biodiversity within the plot. It will also make the forest more resilient to future insect attacks. Ultimately, the trees will ensure forest continuity in the area and contribute to the creation of a resilient forest heritage.
