Résumé du projet
Located in Katerini, north of Mount Olympus in Greece, the Aronas forest is the subject of an assisted natural regeneration (ANR) project. This gentle management method enhances the existing forest, mainly composed of Hungarina oak used for firewood, to enable it to adapt to climate change. Silviculture is managed on a short 20-year rotation. Weakened by climate change, the oaks are dying back. Today, 33,000 trees are planted with a variety of tree species, an approach designed to improve resilience. At the same time, the rotation cycles of wood harvesting will be modified. There will also be numerous ecosystem benefits (soil maintenance, biodiversity, etc.). The project will store carbon over the long term, thereby helping to combat global warming.
