Résumé du projet
This chestnut forest is public owned and is in a very critical condition in terms of health condition. The trees are overgrown and their age is estimated between 200 and 450 years old. The main problem is the accelerated shrinkage of the forest area and the total absence of natural regeneration because of the heavy grazing by livestock animals, mainly goats. Study of aerial photographs has shown that in the last 60 years the forest has lost 50% of its original size. In 1945 there were 2,912 trees, while in 1998 there were 1,843 and in 2008, only 1,550 trees. The aim of the project is twofold. The first is to study the browsing capacity of the forest, assess the conservation status, the structure and the functions of the habitat. The second comprises active silvicultural actions as fencing, seedling and sprouting stimulation.Principales essences :

Sur le terrain
Contexte local
On the Euboa Island, in the location of “Kastanologos”, there is a unique chestnut forest of 62 ha. Its aesthetic value is unique and of national importance, therefore the chestnut forest is classified as a landscape of outstanding natural beauty. It is the only pure chestnut forest in southern Euboea and one of the few remaining chestnut forests with centuries-old trees in the country. The area is included in the Natura 2000 network
