Contributes to the mitigation of the greenhouse effect and influences precipitation patterns and the local microclimate.

Preservation of local biodiversity by providing suitable habitats and resources.

Influences the quality and integrity of the soil-water system, and the cycling of water and nutrients.

Supports human well-being, by providing resources, income, education, and supporting recreation and heritage.

In Indre, in the Centre-Val de Loire region, at the heart of the Champeigne Gâtine tourangelle, this plot was originally made up of an old stand of poor-quality pedunculate oaks, around 120 years old, showing dieback of more than 60% due to water stress following the droughts of 2017 and 2018. The project aims to create an irregular high forest of maritime pine. A mixture of four species (both conifers and broadleaves) will be planted in clusters of 15 trees, which will be protected from game. In total, more than 7,000 trees will be planted. These newly planted trees will contribute to the fight against climate change thanks to their carbon storage capacity. In the long term, they will play a full part in establishing a resilient forest heritage.

This project is located in the Périgord Blanc Sud natural region in the centre of the Dordogne. The name comes from the white colour of the soil, due to the presence of limestone. With 43% of its surface area covered by woodland, compared with a national average of 31%, the Dordogne ranks 16th among France's most wooded départements.

Located in the heart of the Dordogne, the Saint-Geyrac forest was severely affected by the storm of 1999, which damaged more than 150 hectares of forest. On these shallow, filtering, south-facing soils, pines are almost the only species adapted to these difficult conditions. The stands concerned by this work are therefore mainly maritime pines, but also include deciduous species in richer areas. The aim of this project is to restore this forest naturally, by testing several regeneration methods. In this way, the owner will be able to direct his management more effectively in the future, and will find it easier to achieve the kind of irregular forest he wants. The aim of this project is to give priority to deciduous species where they are present, and to supplement them where they are insufficient. Ultimately, the forest will become more multifunctional and resilient, without having to resort to clear-cutting and reforestation.

The afforestation rate in Saône-et-Loire is not very high: 21.7%, compared with a national average of 31%. This puts it 63rd in the list of the most wooded départements in France.

The plots concerned by the project were previously monospecific, i.e. composed exclusively of a single variety of tree, in this case Douglas fir. As in agriculture, this method of management is risky for several reasons: impoverishment of the soil, reduced biodiversity and increased risk of biological attack by pathogens or insects. Forests managed in this way are also more sensitive to adverse environmental conditions such as storms and drought. In fact, it was a storm that destroyed the vast majority of the previous stand. This tree-planting project will enable a genuine forest ecosystem to be recreated. The planting of a variety of species will provide a wide range of habitats and resources for biodiversity. The more vigorous stand will also be less susceptible to the vagaries of climate, disease and parasites. The trees will provide quality wood, storing atmospheric carbon over the long term.
