Project description

Reforest'Action and its partner Alcina invite you to plant in Castanet le Haut and experiment climate change adaptation solutions.

The project at a glance

  • Number of trees to be plant :  10,995
  • Area of plantation :  9 hectares
  • Essences plantées : Cedar (35%), fir (18%), chestnut, horn, maple, alisier, lime, walnut, wild apple
  • Type of project: restoration, enrichment and reforestation of a dying massif

Context

On the border between the Tarn and Hérault rivers in the Haut Languedoc Regional Natural Park and in the type II ZNIEFF of Espinouse's massif, this project aims to restore three areas of dying sitka spruces.

These stations did not seem adapted to this species, the enrichment is made of various species in a logic of adaptation to climate.

The implantation of the Atlas cedar will allow to experiment its resistance to the changing climatic conditions. Then, fir mixed with several hardwoods will allow the optimization of edible mushroom production in response to high social expectations on the territory.

The blend of different precious hardwoods makes possible to experiment the behaviour of inter species associativity, the diversification of habitats and the production of timber over the long term.

Monitoring

2020 - 2021 : the ash specie shows signs of natural regeneration. Although the plot is very fertile and well exposed to sun, the competing vegetation (bramble, broom) can be challenging. Clearing works have been initiated to release the plot which still shows satisfying results (75% recovery rate).
