Project description

Reforest'Action and its partner Sylva Nova invite you to participate in the reforestation of this dying forest in the Netherlands!

The project at a glance

  • Number of trees to be planted: 5,000
  • Plantation area: 2,5 hectares
  • Species planted: Douglas fir, hybrid larch, red cedar, basswood
  • Project type: reforestation after a storm
  • Planting season: Winter 2021-2022

The origin of the project

A hurricane destroyed the forests in the north-east of the Netherlands during the summer of 2021. Ommen is hosting a reforestation project to rebuild the devastated area. Formerly a monoculture of Scots pine, the project aims to diversify the existing stand with hardwood species. By introducing cedar species, the project will maintain a constant humidity level and produce honey for insects.
In the long term, the forest cover restored will host a rich local biodiversity. The trees will limit soil erosion and the diversity of species will improve the forest's resistance to climatic hazards. Finally, the trees will store carbon, thus contributing to the fight against global warming.
