In Sumatra, villagers reconnect with the benefits of mangroves

During the audit mission of our two projects located in Sumatra in October 2022, we went to meet those who live off the mangrove and who work together to restore it. In the field, villagers are quick to share their stories with us. We have collected the stories of their greatest successes in rehabilitating the mangrove at the heart of their daily lives.

Regenerative projects to restore Sumatra's mangroves

Reforest'Action's involvement in Indonesia dates back to 2017. With the aim of restoring and extending the native mangrove on the island of Sumatra in order to protect its coastline and secure the economic activities linked to it, a sustainable partnership was established that year with the local NGO Yagasu. Since the autumn of 2021, Reforest'Action has extended its range of activities by financing a second mangrove restoration project in Sumatra, designed to last three years and carried out by the NGO Yakopi.

The regenerated mangrove of Sumatra

On the Indonesian island of Sumatra, mangroves are a source of life, natural resources and economic activity for local communities. Threatened by industrial palm oil production, intensive aquaculture and charcoal exports, this forest ecosystem between land and sea is disappearing. To restore the mangrove in North Sumatra and allow it to once again realise its wide range of environmental and socio-economic benefits, Reforest'Action is funding two regenerative projects that will have helped to reconstitute nearly 900 hectares of mangrove since 2017 and by 2024. Discover the report of our mission in the field, meeting our project leaders and the people who contribute to them on a daily basis.

Blue Carbon Ecosystems: A “Nature-Based Solution” to fight Climate Change

Blue Carbon Ecosystems: A “Nature-Based Solution” to fight Climate Change

The term “Blue Carbon” refers to the carbon stored in coastal and marine ecosystems, such as seagrasses, salt marshes, mangrove swamps, peatlands, and kelp beds. Blue carbon ecosystems are particularly important for their capacity to store carbon and are considered as a key component of nature-based solutions to climate change. It can also provide many other significant benefits - such as socio-economic benefits, increased biodiversity, or cleaner water. Unfortunately, they are some of the most threatened ecosystems on Earth. 35% of mangroves have disappeared in only 20 years for instance.

Guinea: faced with the disappearance of natural forests, local communities are committed to reforestation

Witnessing massive deforestation and the environmental devastation it causes, village communities are embarking with RENASCEDD, our technical partner based in Conakry, to restore forests in Guinea. Initiated in 2018 with financial support from Reforest'Action, the reforestation project is being conducted on the ground thanks to the commitment of the people who are direct beneficiaries.

Since 2017, Reforest'Action has been supporting the restoration of the Indonesian mangrove

In Sumatra, the project to restore the mangrove and protect the coastal green belt in the north of the island, funded by Reforest'Action since 2017, has just reached a new level in terms of trees planted. Since November 2020, 100,000 new mangrove seedlings have taken root as part of the project, bringing to 230,000 the number of trees planted since the beginning of the planting season. The aim of the project is to restore and extend the native mangrove forests of the Indonesian island in order to protect its coastline and secure the economic activities linked to it. Here is a look at the new projects carried out by our technical partner in the field, Yagasu.

Guinea : construction of nurseries and new reforestation season

In February 2020 in Guinea, Reforest'Action took part in a technical support mission co-organized by the French Embassy and the EESC, in order to support RENASCEDD in the development of its own nurseries. Eight months later, building on this experience, our technical partner in the field successfully completed the production of thousands of trees in nurseries and conducted their planting alongside local communities.
